Every year, between the end of October and the middle of November, a great many husbands in India type the same four words into a search bar: gift for my wife. Karva Chauth, Diwali and very often an anniversary land within a few weeks of each other, and jewellery, perfume and phones have all been done. Clothes are the gift most men are afraid of — wrong size, wrong colour, wrong taste — and they are also the gift most women say they would love, if it were chosen well.

This guide is for getting it right: what to buy at each budget, what colours suit which occasion, how to find out her size without asking, and the one timing problem nobody warns you about.

First, the Dates — and the Timing Problem

Karva Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October in most North Indian calendars (check your family's panchang for local moonrise). Diwali is Sunday, 8 November. An anniversary could be anywhere.

Here is the problem. Anything handmade — and a hand-embroidered outfit is the gift that feels most personal — takes time. Our pieces are made to order over 4–5 weeks, plus shipping. As of mid-September, that means for Karva Chauth, order in the next week or so; for Diwali, order by the end of September. If you are reading this later, skip to the section on giving a gift that has not arrived yet.

What to Buy: The Safe Picks by Occasion

  • Karva Chauth. Red, sindoori, maroon or rani pink — the suhaag colours. A saree is the classic; a red dupatta over something she already owns is the easy win. Our Karva Chauth outfit guide covers what she will actually wear, and if it is her first, see first Karva Chauth outfits.
  • Diwali. Anything festive with some shimmer — gold, jewel tones, tissue and silk. A kurta set she can wear to three card parties is more useful than a saree she wears once.
  • Anniversary. This is the one gift where you are allowed to be romantic rather than practical. Something she would not buy herself. Our guide to anniversary outfits has ideas for the evening itself.

Under ₹10,000: No Size Needed

A hand-embroidered dupatta is the smartest gift in this guide, for a simple reason: it has no size. It lifts a plain kurta she already owns into a festive outfit, and it can be worn every year.

For Karva Chauth, the Inaayat dupatta (₹6,500) is red organza with gold zari hand embroidery and circular floral motifs in resham, gold beads and sequins. The Aftaab dupatta (₹9,500) — named for the Urdu word for sunlight — is rich maroon organza silk with a gota and thread-work border and scattered butas. For Diwali, the Falak dupatta (₹6,500) is deep forest green organza silk with a soft zari border and sequin and cutdana bootis like a starry sky.

If she wears a lot of neutrals, the Gulnaaz dupatta (₹8,500) is muted brown bandhani silk with zardozi, sequins and bold paisley corners — it goes with pinks, rusts and beiges. And for a lighter budget, the Adhira dupatta (₹4,500) is ivory organza with mirror work and resham, and the Paheli dupatta (₹4,750) is a warm orange chanderi embroidered on all sides. See all of them in the dupatta collection.

₹10,000–20,000: The Outfit She Will Wear Most

The Rani & Rana kurta set (₹12,500) is beige silk with all-over golden polka dots and sequin and gota patti embroidery at the neckline and hem — the one she will wear to every Diwali party. The Rasiya & Misri set (₹12,500) is coral pink mulberry brocade silk with gold-thread floral embroidery. The Noor & Ahana anarkali (₹14,500) is an ivory woven anarkali with Mukesh work and floral hand embroidery on the bodice and sleeves.

For Karva Chauth in this band, the Laal Ishq saree (₹19,500) is deep vermillion organza silk with sequin vines and abstract florals — the colour, literally named for love. Saree gifts have one advantage: the saree itself needs no size. The blouse does, and is sold separately.

₹20,000 and Above: The Gift She Keeps

The Rangrez saree (₹22,500) is deep red chiffon, the colour of alta on a bride's feet, with floral bootis hand-embroidered in sequins and beads in ivory, saffron, plum and rose. The Sakhi saree (₹25,000) is deep sindoori red organza with sequin, cutdana and gota work and a bold scalloped border that echoes bridal motifs. For an anniversary, the Rahi & Amara saree (₹24,500) is fuchsia Banarasi silk with gold-woven florals and a gold lace border, with a champagne silk blouse included.

How to Get Her Size Without Asking

  • Measure a kurta or blouse that fits her well. Lay it flat, measure across the chest just below the armholes and double it; do the same at the waist; then measure the length from shoulder to hem. Send us those numbers and we will translate them.
  • Check the label on two or three things she wears often, and look for the size that repeats.
  • Enlist her sister, mother or best friend. They know, and they enjoy the conspiracy.
  • When in doubt, go up. A kurta can be taken in far more easily than let out.
  • Or avoid the question entirely with a dupatta or a saree, neither of which needs a size.

Our full guide to gifting custom Indian wear covers the process end to end, and our team on WhatsApp can help you pick from a photograph of what she already wears.

Left It Late? Give the Promise

If the occasion is days away, do not buy something you will regret just to have a box to hand over. Order the piece you actually want for her, print a photograph of it, and put that in a card with a note that it is being made by hand for her in Jaipur. It will arrive a few weeks later — and, in our experience, the story of it being made lands better than a last-minute box. For more ideas, see our Diwali gift guide.

A Gift Made by Hand, for Her

Hand-embroidered dupattas from ₹4,500, kurta sets from ₹12,500 and sarees from ₹18,500 — each made to order in Jaipur. For Karva Chauth on 29 October, order this week; for Diwali on 8 November, by the end of September. Browse dupattas or sarees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Karva Chauth gift for a wife?

Something in the traditional suhaag colours — red, sindoori, maroon or rani pink — that she can wear on the day. A red saree is the classic gift; a hand-embroidered red or maroon dupatta is the safest, because it needs no size and turns something she already owns into a Karva Chauth outfit.

When is Karva Chauth in 2026?

Karva Chauth 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October in most North Indian calendars, ten days before Diwali on Sunday, 8 November. Moonrise times vary by city, so check a local panchang for the time to break the fast.

Is it a good idea to gift clothes to your wife?

Yes, if you remove the two risks: size and taste. Choose a dupatta or saree, which need no size, or measure a kurta that already fits her well. For taste, look at what she wears most often and stay close to those colours, rather than choosing what you would like to see her in.

How long does a handmade outfit take to arrive?

Our pieces are made to order over 4–5 weeks, with shipping time additional. For a festival date, count back at least six weeks. If you are short on time, order the piece and give a printed photograph with a note on the day.
