An Indian wedding is not one event but a week of them, and each has its own unwritten rules — what colour, how covered, how much shine, and how long you have to sit in it. This is how we think about dressing for each, and the pieces we make for them.
Everything here is made to order in four to five weeks, so the only real deadline is the first function.
Green, and worked to be danced in.
The most relaxed of the days, and the longest. Colour is expected — greens, yellows, rani pink — and the piece has to survive several hours of sitting, eating and dancing.
Something you do not mind staining.
Turmeric does not come out. Wear yellow or ivory by tradition, in a fabric you are willing to lose — cotton, chanderi, light silk — and keep the hand-work away from the sleeves.
Made to move.
An evening of performance, so weight and movement matter more than anything. Shararas, lehengas and anything with flare read well from a distance and under stage light.
Covered, and quietly rich.
Modesty first — full sleeves, a dupatta that stays put. The richness sits in the cloth and the hand-work rather than in the silhouette.
The first time both families look.
Smaller, brighter, usually daytime. A kurta set or an anarkali does more here than a lehenga, which can read as trying too hard at a roka.
The one that is not traditional.
Reception and cocktail are where the rules loosen — a saree in tissue, a structured blouse, something in black if you want it.
Present, but never the brightest.
The whole art of guest dressing: dressed enough to honour the occasion, never so much that you compete with the family. Avoid red, avoid full bridal ivory.
Comfortable. Choose, send measurements, and there is room for a fitting change.
Still easy. Standard making is 4–5 weeks, then shipping.
