Kids at Chhath Puja: What to Dress Them In for the Ghat

Chhath is not a festival you dress children up for in the usual sense. There is no party, there is no dance floor, and the two most important moments happen standing in water — one at sunset, one before sunrise. What children need is to be warm, covered, comfortable on their feet, and dressed with enough respect that nobody at the ghat looks twice. Everything else is secondary.

Chhath Puja 2026 runs from Friday 13 November to Monday 16 November — Nahay Khay on the 13th, Kharna on the 14th, Sandhya Arghya on the 15th and Usha Arghya on the 16th. What Children Actually Do During Chhath

A note worth making first: the vrat itself is kept by the parvaitin, usually a mother, grandmother or aunt, and it is one of the most demanding fasts in the Hindu calendar. Children are not fasting. Their role is to accompany, to carry the daura, to help arrange the thekua and fruit, and to stand at the water. That role is genuinely important and it is also physically demanding — which is why the outfit question is a practical one.

Nahay Khay

The first day. The house is cleaned, the vrati bathes in the river, and the family eats a single sattvik meal. Ordinary clean clothes; nothing ceremonial required.

Kharna

Evening of the second day, when the vrati breaks the day-long fast with rasiao-kheer and roti, and then begins the thirty-six-hour nirjala fast. The prasad is distributed at home to a house full of people. Festive but indoor — a good silk or chanderi set is right.

Sandhya Arghya

The evening offering to the setting sun, standing in the river. The whole family walks to the ghat in procession. Crowded, muddy underfoot, and cold once the sun goes. This is the outfit that matters most.

Usha Arghya

The pre-dawn offering to the rising sun, which means leaving the house around four in the morning in November. Genuinely cold. Layer properly and accept that this is not the photograph you were planning.

Colour and Register

• Yellow, orange and red are the Chhath palette — the colour of the sun being worshipped, and of the fruit and thekua in the soop.
• Green and pink are common and unremarkable.
• Black is avoided. This is one of the stricter festivals about it, and at a ghat it will be noticed.
• Plain white on its own is best avoided too in a ritual context.
• Keep it simple. Chhath is an austere, disciplined festival, not a display one. Heavy sequin and mirror work reads as out of tune with the occasion. Thread work, gota and quiet embroidery are the right register.
• Nothing torn, nothing worn to the ghat twice. Traditionally, clothes worn to the arghya are clean and often new, and shoes are not worn on the ghat itself.

For Kharna and the Home Evening

The Noorpari kurta with Surkh pant — Kids is vibrant rose pink silk with delicate hand embroidery along the neckline and hem, drawn from classical floral motifs — festive, warm-toned and quiet enough for a puja evening.

The Afreen kurta with Maahi pant — Kids in sunshine yellow chanderi, with hand-embroidered cutdana and bead flowers, sits squarely in the festival's own colour. The Faiza kurta with Rida pant — Kids in soft gold silk, with gota and thread work in rose and coral, is the more understated option if your family keeps Chhath austerely.

For the Ghat

The brief here is different: covered, warm, and something you do not mind getting wet at the hem. A full-sleeved or three-quarter-sleeved kurta with a straight or wide pant is the practical shape — a lehenga at a crowded muddy ghat is a decision you regret at 4am.

The Vanya kurta with Bani pant — Kids in warm beige silk, with a classic scoop neckline and three-quarter sleeves, is an understated ceremonial look that layers well under a shawl. The Nazakat kurta with Saanwli pant — Kids in chanderi, with scattered floral bootis and bold paisley motifs on the sleeves and pant hem, gives a wide leg that stays out of the water and moves easily on a slope.

Seven Practical Notes for the Ghat

• Shoes come off at the ghat. Bare feet on cold wet stone at 4am. Warm socks for the walk there, easily removed slip-ons, and something to carry them in.
• The hem will get wet. Choose a length that clears the ground, or accept it. Do not send a child in something that drags.
• November mornings are genuinely cold in Bihar, UP and Jharkhand. A shawl is not decorative here. Layer underneath if you need to.
• Ghats are crowded and dark before dawn. Avoid long trailing dupattas on small children. If a dupatta is part of the outfit, pin it.
• Keep it modest and covered. This is a ritual space with a strong sense of decorum. Sleeveless is not the right call.
• Two outfits is enough for four days. One for Kharna, one for the arghyas — with the second one warm.
