For an Arya Samaj wedding, dress as you would for a festive daytime puja: a silk or Chanderi kurta set, an anarkali or a light saree in a warm, cheerful colour, with a dupatta you can keep close to your body. The ceremony is usually short, often an hour or two, and it is built around a havan, a sacred fire that everyone sits near. So choose sleeves and drapes that will not trail towards the flame, natural fabrics over synthetics, and a silhouette you can sit in on the floor. Expect to take your shoes off. Save your heaviest piece for the reception, if there is one.

The Arya Samaj is a Hindu reform movement founded by Swami Dayanand Saraswati in Bombay on 10 April 1875. Its call was "back to the Vedas": it holds the Vedas as the source of true knowledge and does not practise idol worship. An Arya Samaj wedding follows that logic. There are no idols in the mandap and no deity at the centre of the room, only the fire, the Vedic mantras and the couple. Practice varies between mandirs, priests and families, so treat this as a map rather than a rulebook.

What Makes an Arya Samaj Wedding Different

If you are used to week-long north Indian weddings, four things will feel different.

  • It is short. Arya Samaj mandirs and priests describe the ceremony itself as lasting roughly ninety minutes to two hours. The whole visit, with paperwork, can take a few hours.
  • It is often small. Many couples invite only close family and a few friends, though some hold a larger wedding at a hall or home with an Arya Samaj priest.
  • There is no muhurat. The Arya Samaj finds no basis in the Vedas for predictive astrology, so no day is inauspicious. Mandirs conduct weddings on any day of the year.
  • It is usually in daylight. Many mandirs list wedding hours of roughly 8 or 10 in the morning to 5 in the evening. A wedding at a hall or home can be at any hour, so check the card.

If you are comparing it with other small weddings, our guides to court marriages and intimate weddings and temple weddings cover the neighbouring dress codes.

An Honest Note on What We Make

We make hand-embroidered kurta sets, anarkalis, sharara sets, sarees and dupattas in our Jaipur atelier. We do not make menswear, shawls or jewellery. We do not weave our own cloth either: we buy handwoven fabric, including Banarasi and Chanderi, and our karigars embroider it. Every adult piece is cut to your measurements at no extra charge. Design changes such as a longer sleeve or a different neckline are not automatic, so ask us on WhatsApp what is possible on the design you like. Everything below is described as it actually is.

The Ceremony, Step by Step

The rites follow the Vedic wedding sanskar. Order and naming vary a little between mandirs, but you will usually see:

  • Varmala and welcome. The couple exchange garlands, and the bride welcomes the groom with water.
  • Madhuparka. The bride offers the groom a mixture of curd, ghee and honey, a symbolic gesture of welcome.
  • Kanyadaan and the havan. The bride's parents give her hand, and the priest lights the fire. Oblations are offered into it with Vedic mantras throughout the ceremony.
  • Panigrahan. The groom takes the bride's right hand, the formal acceptance of each other.
  • Shilarohan and laja homa. The bride places her foot on a stone, a wish for a marriage as steady as rock, and then offers puffed rice into the fire.
  • The pheras and the saptapadi. The couple circle the fire, then take seven steps together, each tied to a vow.
  • Sindoor and mangalsutra. The groom applies sindoor and ties the mangalsutra, and the couple are blessed with flowers.

As a guest, you will mostly sit and watch. Mandirs ask for quiet around the havan, so keep your phone on silent.

Sitting Near the Fire: Dress for the Havan

The havan kund is the centre of the room, and in a small mandir hall the front rows may be close to it. Dress with that in mind.

  • Prefer natural fabrics. Fire-safety advice is consistent on this: synthetics such as polyester and nylon tend to melt and stick when they catch. Silk, Chanderi and cotton are the safer instinct. If you are unsure what a piece is made of, ask us.
  • Control the loose ends. Loose, floaty fabric is the real risk. Wide bell sleeves, long tassels and an open organza pallu can all drift. Pin your dupatta or tuck your pallu before you sit down.
  • Think about the floor. Many mandirs seat guests on durries or low benches. A straight kurta and pant, a churidaar or a sharara sits more easily than a tight saree pleat.
  • Shoes come off. Shoes are kept away from the havan area, so wear something you can slip out of easily, and keep a hem that clears the floor when you walk barefoot.

The Faiza & Rida set (₹19,500) is almost made for this. It is a soft gold silk kurta with a gentle V-neckline and three-quarter sleeves that stay well clear of the fire. Gota and thread work in subtle rose and coral trails along the neckline, sleeves and hem, and the matching Rida pant, in the same silk, has a broad embroidered border.

The Ziya & Saaz set (₹14,500) is a bright sunflower silk kurta with a minimal neckline and side-slit sleeves, over a matching churidaar. A floral bel in marodi, sequins and thread work in pink and wine tones runs along the hem. It is the kind of quiet, celebratory piece that suits an intimate ceremony. If you want sleeves and length covered, the Banni & Aayat set (₹19,350) is a full-length Chanderi kurta with hand-covered buttons down the front and floral and paisley detailing in sequins, nakshi, cutdana and thread work on the yoke, cuffs and hem, over churidar-style Chanderi pants.

Daytime Colour: Bright, Warm, Not Bridal

Because most Arya Samaj weddings happen in daylight, the colour logic is that of a morning puja rather than a night reception. Yellows, marigold, pinks, magenta, greens and soft golds all look right in a sunlit hall. Leave deep bridal red and the heaviest gold to the bride. Many Hindu families would also rather guests avoided all-black or all-white at the ceremony itself, so if you love ivory, add a coloured dupatta.

The Afreen & Maahi set (₹15,875) is sunshine-yellow Chanderi, its flowers hand-embroidered in cutdana and bead work, with soft gathers at the bust and beaded neck and sleeve hems. The Haniya & Mithila set (₹21,000) is a magenta Chanderi kurta in a classic A-line, with floral motifs in gold thread, sequins and multicolour thread work along the sleeves and hem, over matching Chanderi pants. For something quieter, the Darya & Keya set (₹20,175) is a champagne-taupe silk kurta in a straight, long-line cut, with magenta-pink florals and golden vines in zari, metallic thread, sequins, cutdana and micro-beads at the neckline and sleeve hems.

The Dupatta: Covering Your Head Is Your Call

Whether guests cover their heads varies by family. In some, older women draw a dupatta over their hair during the mantras; in others nobody does. Watch the bride's mother and follow her lead. Either way, a dupatta that behaves well matters more near a fire than anywhere else. Soft Chanderi grips better and floats less than crisp organza, and a pin at the shoulder keeps the ends in your lap. Our guide to draping a dupatta over your head shows several secure ways.

  • The Zarveen dupatta (₹9,500) is sheer Chanderi in a soft sage green with a delicate zari border, light and easy over a gold or ivory kurta.
  • The Nureen dupatta (₹10,500) is sunshine-yellow Chanderi with a traditional golden trim at the borders.
  • The Paheli dupatta (₹4,750) is warm orange Chanderi, hand-embroidered along all sides with floral vines in tonal sequins, cutdana and bead work.

If You Are Close Family: A Saree, Tucked In

The bride's parents sit closest to the fire for the kanyadaan, and family often sit just behind. If you wear a saree, pin the pleats and the pallu at the shoulder so nothing slides forward when you lean in.

The Phalgun & Myra saree (₹27,500) is yellow Banarasi silk with floral motifs woven in silver thread and a rich lace border, paired with the ivory Myra blouse, which has a rounded neckline and a constellation of embroidered floral butis with delicate sequin work. Yellow is exactly the colour of a daytime ceremony.

The Paperwork Part, and Why It Matters to Guests

Part of an Arya Samaj wedding is legal. The Arya Marriage Validation Act of 1937, still in force, confirms that a marriage between two Arya Samajists is not invalid only because they came from different castes or sub-castes, or because one had earlier followed another religion. Under the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955, a Hindu marriage that includes the saptapadi becomes complete and binding when the seventh step is taken.

The mandir usually issues its own certificate. In 2022, though, the Supreme Court observed that issuing marriage certificates is the work of the authorities, not the Arya Samaj, and lawyers advise registering the marriage separately with the sub-registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act or, for interfaith couples, the Special Marriage Act. Our guide to registered marriages covers what to wear to that second appointment.

For a guest, the practical point: two witnesses with valid photo ID are required. If you have been asked to be one, carry the original ID, and expect to be in the photographs of the signing.

After the Ceremony: Lunch, or a Reception Later

Many Arya Samaj weddings end with a simple family meal, and some families hold a separate reception later. For the lunch, your ceremony outfit is perfect. For a reception, go richer: see our day and brunch wedding guide and our reception dress code guide.

If you want one outfit to carry from the mandir floor to a long lunch, the Roshni & Nazreen set (₹31,800) pairs a mustard-yellow Chanderi kurta with a soft pink Chanderi sharara. The kurta is covered in an all-over trellis of vines in fine aari and golden thread, with blossoms in pink resham, tiny sequins, nakshi and moti. A sharara is also the easiest thing to sit cross-legged in. Our sharara collection has more.

Three Things Worth Knowing

  • Arya Samaj weddings can be planned at short notice. With no muhurat to wait for, some couples marry within weeks of deciding. If yours is less than five weeks away, tell us the date on WhatsApp before you choose anything.
  • A winter morning can be cool. A December or January ceremony in a north Indian hall, barefoot on the floor, can feel chilly. Choose silk, and carry a plain shawl (we do not make them) for once you are away from the fire.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a woman wear to an Arya Samaj wedding as a guest?

A silk or Chanderi kurta set, an anarkali or a light saree in a warm daytime colour, with a dupatta. Because guests sit near the havan fire, choose natural fabrics, avoid wide trailing sleeves and pin your dupatta or pallu. Leave bridal red and the heaviest gold to the bride.

How long does an Arya Samaj wedding take?

The ceremony itself usually takes about ninety minutes to two hours. With document checks and the certificate, a mandir wedding can take a few hours in all. A simple lunch often follows.

Do I need to cover my head at an Arya Samaj wedding?

It depends on the family. In some, older women cover their hair with a dupatta during the mantras and guests are welcome to do the same; in others nobody does. Watch the bride's mother and follow her lead.

Are Arya Samaj weddings held at night?

Weddings at Arya Samaj mandirs are usually held during the day; there is no muhurat, so the time is chosen for convenience. Weddings conducted by an Arya Samaj priest at a hall or home can be at any hour.

Is an Arya Samaj marriage certificate enough to register a marriage?

Not on its own. In 2022 the Supreme Court observed that issuing marriage certificates is the work of the authorities, and lawyers advise couples to register the marriage with the sub-registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act. Two witnesses with photo ID are needed at the ceremony.
