Diwali Abroad: What to Wear to the Office Potluck, the Community Dinner & the House Party

Diwali abroad does not arrive; you build it. There is no week off, no lit-up street, no neighbour sending over a thali. Instead there is a Tuesday in November, a commute in the dark, and a row of diyas on a windowsill that you lit before work because nobody else was going to. And then, spread across two or three weekends, the celebrations you and your community have put together: the office potluck, the association's dinner-dance in a hotel ballroom, the open house with forty pairs of shoes at the door.

Each of those is a different dress code, in weather that was never part of the plan. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November, with Dhanteras on Friday the 6th and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday the 11th. This is a guide to dressing for the Diwali you actually have.

The Office Diwali

The brief: festive enough that colleagues can tell it is an occasion, practical enough for a day of meetings, and nothing you have to explain. Avoid anything with a trailing dupatta, a bare midriff or serious weight. The most useful idea is one Indian piece, styled with things you already wear to work.

The Raat Rani, Vani & Kiyara set (₹16,500) is the best answer we make: a fitted blazer and wide-leg pants in black Varanasi silk brocade with an all-over gold jaal and a hand-embroidered collar. Worn together it is a Diwali outfit; the blazer alone over a black roll-neck is a very good work jacket for the rest of the winter. The Illahi shirt (₹5,200) is modal satin on a rich emerald base with hand-embroidered floral medallions — tuck it into tailored trousers. And the Ira & Hoor shirt set (₹9,500), in silk cotton zari checks with turquoise-lifted zardozi at the collar and cuffs, reads as festive without reading as costume.

The Community Dinner or Diwali Ball

Every city with an Indian association has one: a ticketed evening in a banquet hall, a buffet, a DJ who plays the same twelve songs, and the entire community in its best clothes. This is the one night to dress fully — and because the ballroom will be warm and the evening long, a saree is ideal.

The Chandni saree (₹22,500) is deep black chiffon with vertical lines of sequins and cutdana at the border — old-world glamour, done quietly, and superb under ballroom lighting. The Aashiqui saree (₹37,295) is royal-blue chiffon with hand-embroidered floral motifs in sequins and cutdana. For those who would rather not drape, the Heer & Zunaira set (₹16,500) is golden jacquard silk with an all-over jaal and gold tissue detailing — Diwali-gold without a single pleat to manage.

The House Party and Open House

You will be sitting on a sofa arm, standing in a kitchen, possibly on the floor for cards, and taking your shoes off at the door — so wear good socks or plan for bare feet, and skip anything floor-length that needs heels to work. A kurta set is right. The Anahita & Amira set (₹19,500) is magenta silk with floral embroidery in pink, blue and ivory over a burnt-orange pant — the colours of gulal and marigold. The Temple or Gurdwara Visit

Modest, comfortable, easy to sit cross-legged in, with a dupatta to cover your head where that is the custom. Ivory, yellow, red and green are all good. The Naina & Ahalya set (₹12,500) in ivory cotton with hand-embroidered florals is exactly right, with a Falak dupatta (₹6,500) in forest-green organza silk over it.

The Cold: Layering That Does Not Ruin the Outfit

• Choose warmth in the fabric. Velvet and heavy silk are your friends abroad in a way they never are in India. The Sahiba kurta and palazzo (₹27,500) is deep maroon velvet embroidered in antique gold with kasab dori, metal sequins and zardozi — genuinely warm, and unmistakably festive.
• Thermals are invisible. A thin thermal top under a full-sleeved blouse or kurta, and leggings under a lehenga or sharara, change everything.
• Plan the outer layer as part of the outfit. A long wool coat in black, camel or deep red over a saree looks deliberate. A ski jacket does not.
• A shawl for inside, a coat for outside. They do different jobs.
• Closed shoes to travel, juttis in your bag. Nobody's feet should suffer for a car park.
