Kanya Pujan Outfit Ideas: What to Wear for Kanjak on Ashtami & Navami
Of all nine days of Navratri, Kanya Pujan is the one that fills the house. Little girls arrive in their prettiest clothes, feet are washed, a tilak is applied, and plates of halwa, puri and kaale chane go around. It is a morning of touching feet, carrying trays, and kneeling on the floor — which makes it a very specific dressing problem. You want to look traditional and put-together for the puja, but you also need to be able to move, cook and bend without thinking about it. Here's how to dress for Kanjak, both for the woman running the house and for the girls being welcomed into it.
When Kanya Pujan Falls in 2026
Sharad Navratri 2026 runs from Sunday, 11 October to Monday, 19 October, with Vijayadashami on Tuesday, 20 October. Kanya Pujan is performed on Ashtami, Sunday 18 October 2026, or on Navami, Monday 19 October 2026 — families follow one or the other depending on tradition. Nine young girls are invited, and often a young boy as Batuk Bhairav alongside them.
Because both days fall over a weekend this year, most households will be hosting rather than rushing back from work — which means a slightly dressier outfit is worth it, as long as it can survive a morning in the kitchen.
The Colours That Belong to Kanjak
Red and vermillion are the natural choices — they carry the energy of the Devi, and they photograph beautifully against the puja thali and the marigold. The Jazabah kurta and Saiyan pant in deep red silk is rich and celebratory, with tonal embroidery along the neckline, hem and sleeves in gota patti, marodi, resham and bead work. It reads as a proper festive outfit without any of the weight of a heavier ensemble.
For a slightly softer take on the same idea, the Nawaazish kurta with Zivah pant in deep vermillion Chanderi has floral motifs hand-embroidered in thread and sequins, framed in a distinctive square yoke. Chanderi is the practical hero of this whole occasion — it looks ceremonial, but it is light enough to spend three hours in.

If red feels too close to what you wore for Ashtami puja itself, magenta is the obvious alternative. The Haniya magenta Chanderi kurta in a classic A-line cut carries hand-embroidered floral motifs with gold thread, sequin and multicolour detailing along the sleeves and hem — festive, but comfortable enough to serve prasad in.
Dress for the Kitchen, Not Just the Camera
Kanya Pujan is genuinely physical. There is halwa to stir, puris to fry, feet to wash, and a lot of sitting cross-legged on the floor. A few things worth thinking about before you pick:
- Choose a kurta set over a saree unless someone else is handling the cooking. A kurta and pant lets you sit on the floor and get up nine times without rearranging anything.
- Keep sleeves short or three-quarter. Long, heavily embroidered cuffs near a kadhai are a bad idea.
- Skip the dupatta while cooking and drape it once the girls arrive. Or pick a set where the kurta stands on its own.
- Avoid anything with dangling embellishment at the hem — it catches on floor seating and low tables.
- Wear something washable-adjacent. Chanderi and cotton handle a splash of ghee far better than heavy tissue.
A lighter Chanderi set like Banni kurta with Aayat pant, hand-embroidered with sequins, nakshi, cutdana and thread work in floral and paisley detailing on the yoke, cuffs and hem, hits the balance well: quiet opulence that doesn't announce itself, in a fabric that moves.

What the Little Girls Wear
For the kanjaks themselves, the brief is simple: bright, comfortable, and easy to eat in. These are children between roughly two and ten who will be sitting in a row on the floor, being fed, and then running off. Nothing scratchy, nothing that needs adjusting.
Rose pink is the traditional favourite. The Noorpari kids kurta in vibrant rose pink silk, with delicate hand-embroidery along the neckline and hem drawn from classical floral motifs, is festive in a way little girls actually like — its sleeveless silhouette also keeps things easy at the table. For a richer note, the Anahita kids set in rich magenta silk is hand-embroidered with sequins and beads around the neckline, cuffs and back collar, in floral motifs of pink, blue and ivory.

If the girl of your own house is the one being dressed for other people's Kanjak invitations, a soft pink set like Ruhani kurta with Nilofer pant — a floral neckline in zardozi, sequins and cutdana, with scattered bootis across the body and sleeves — travels well between houses and stays comfortable through several rounds of prasad.
For a family that wants a little more occasion, the Mehergul kids lehenga with Abroo blouse in striking rani pink silk, its blouse hand-embroidered with sequins, cutdana and thread work, is the festive option — best for slightly older girls who enjoy dressing up and won't mind the extra fabric.
Jewellery and Finishing Touches
Keep it light on both sides. For the woman of the house: jhumkas, a few bangles, and that's genuinely enough — anything around the neck gets in the way when you bend to wash feet. A bindi and sindoor complete the look far more than a heavy necklace would. For the girls, small studs or light jhumkas and a couple of bangles; nothing that can be pulled, lost, or sat on.
Bare feet are traditional for the puja anyway, so footwear is a non-issue indoors — but keep a pair of soft juttis by the door for anyone stepping out.
A Note on Gifting the Kanjaks
Alongside the traditional gifts — a coin, a red chunri, bangles, stationery — some families have started gifting the girls something they'll wear again. If you're planning ahead for next year's Ashtami, a made-to-measure festive set for a niece or a neighbour's daughter is a lovely, lasting version of the same gesture. Just remember our pieces are hand-embroidered to order over four to five weeks, so this is a thought for early September, not the week of.

When is Kanya Pujan in 2026?
Sharad Navratri 2026 runs from 11 October to 19 October, with Dussehra on 20 October. Kanya Pujan is performed on Ashtami, Sunday 18 October 2026, or on Navami, Monday 19 October 2026, depending on family tradition.
What colour should I wear for Kanjak?
Red and vermillion are the traditional choices for Kanya Pujan, carrying the energy of the Devi. Magenta, rani pink and rose pink are equally appropriate alternatives, and all photograph beautifully against the puja thali and marigold.
Should I wear a saree or a kurta set for Kanya Pujan?
A kurta set is usually the more practical choice. Kanya Pujan involves cooking, washing the girls' feet and sitting on the floor, and a kurta with pants lets you move freely throughout. Save the saree for the evening if you're going out afterwards.
What should little girls wear for Kanjak?
Bright, soft and easy to eat in. A silk or Chanderi kurta set in rose pink, magenta or another festive colour works best — comfortable enough to sit on the floor in, with nothing scratchy or fussy. Keep jewellery minimal with small studs and a couple of bangles.
