Fifteen days after Diwali, the lamps come out again — this time for the gods. Dev Diwali on the Kartik Purnima full moon is the night Varanasi lights every one of its eighty-four ghats with lakhs of diyas, and the night that Kartik snan, Ganga aarti and Guru Nanak Jayanti all fall together. It is the most beautiful festival to photograph and one of the coldest to stand outside for. Both facts should shape what you wear.

When Kartik Purnima Falls in 2026

Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali fall on Tuesday, 24 November 2026 — the full moon of the month of Kartik, fifteen days after Diwali on 8 November. Guru Nanak Jayanti, Gurpurab, is observed on the same day, which is why many families move between a gurudwara in the morning and a river or temple in the evening.

The day traditionally begins with Kartik snan, a ritual dip at dawn, and ends with deep daan — the floating of lamps at dusk. In between, most of it happens outdoors, in late-November air.

Ivory, Cream and Gold Is the Palette

Unlike Diwali, which invites every jewel tone at once, Kartik Purnima leans pale. Ivory, cream, off-white and soft gold are what the day traditionally calls for — they read as devotional rather than celebratory, and they glow extraordinarily well against thousands of oil lamps at dusk.

A few practical things beyond warmth. Ghats are crowded on Dev Diwali to a degree that's hard to overstate, and much of the evening is spent either seated on stone or standing in a press of people. Keep the drape pinned and the bag small and cross-body. Avoid a long trailing pallu or dupatta near diyas — there are thousands of open flames on those steps, and this is not a theoretical risk.

For the Gurudwara in the Morning

Because Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on the same day, many families begin at a gurudwara. That shifts the brief slightly: covered head, covered arms and legs, and simple dressing without heavy embellishment.
