Kids' Bhai Dooj Outfit Ideas: What to Dress Them In for Tika Day

Bhai Dooj is a short festival with a long photograph. The ritual itself takes ten minutes — the tika, the aarti, the sweets, the gift — but those ten minutes produce the picture that ends up in the family group and stays there for a year. Which means the dressing question is narrow and specific: what do children wear for a morning ceremony that involves sitting still, being photographed at close range, and then eating a very large lunch?

Bhai Dooj 2026 falls on Wednesday 11 November, two days after Diwali. It is known as Bhai Phota in Bengal, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra and Gujarat, Bhai Tika in Nepal and Yama Dwitiya more formally — the rituals differ in detail but the shape of the day is the same everywhere.

The Shape of the Day

The tika

The sister applies a tilak — vermilion, sandalwood, rice, or in Bengal a paste of sandalwood, kajal and ghee — to her brother's forehead, performs the aarti, and prays for his long life. He gives her a gift. Both children are seated, facing each other, on the floor or on a low seat, with the whole family standing around them with phones.

This is a close-range, front-facing ritual. What is visible is the neckline, the shoulders and the sleeves — which is where the embroidery should be.

The lunch

Bhai Dooj is a feeding festival. The sister traditionally cooks or serves her brother's favourite food, and the meal is long, seated and generous. Nothing tight at the waist, and sleeves that push up.

The visiting

Many families do the round of cousins' and married sisters' homes across the day, which means shoes on and off repeatedly and a lot of getting in and out of cars. Slip-ons, always.

Colour

• The post-Diwali warm palette carries over — pinks, reds, marigold, gold, deep coral. Bhai Dooj is the tail of the Diwali week and the house is still decorated for it.
• Soft pinks and blues photograph best at close range. Because the tika ritual is shot from a metre away, a quieter colour with detailed neckline embroidery reads better than a loud one with nothing happening near the face.
• Black is best avoided for the ceremony itself, as with most puja days.
• Do not put a child in white for a vermilion tilak. This is a very short walk to a stain.

Six Practical Notes

• Dress for the neckline. The tika photograph is taken from the front at close range. Detail at the neck and shoulders does more work than anything at the hem.
• Floor seating. Both children sit for the ritual. Wide pants and shararas sit better cross-legged than anything narrow.
• Vermilion stains. Keep white and very pale cream away from the tika itself, or accept the risk knowingly.
• It is November. Mornings in the north are cold. A shawl or a light jacket over the top for the travelling, off for the ceremony.
