Kids at Durga Puja: Pandal-Hopping Outfit Ideas

Pujo is the one festival that is genuinely designed for children. Five days off school. Late nights that nobody objects to. Unlimited street food. Pandals the size of buildings, lit up like film sets. And a running, unspoken competition among every family on the para about whose children are best dressed on which day. If you are dressing a child for Durga Puja, the good news is that they will love it. The bad news is that pandal hopping is a physical endurance event and most festive outfits are not built for one.

Mahalaya falls on Saturday, 10 October 2026, beginning Devi Paksha and the countdown. The main puja days — Shashthi through Vijaya Dashami — run through the middle of the month, with Vijaya Dashami and Dussehra on Tuesday, 20 October. Check your local panchang for the exact tithi timings, which shift slightly by region.

What Pandal Hopping Actually Involves

Before any outfit decisions, understand the day you are dressing for:

• Enormous amounts of walking, much of it in queues, much of it at night, much of it holding a small hand.
• Crowds that are genuinely dense. Children get jostled, and anything that dangles gets caught.
• Mid-October humidity. In Kolkata this is still warm and sticky, whatever the calendar suggests.
• Street food, continuously. Egg rolls, phuchka, kathi rolls, ice cream. Assume the outfit will be marked.
• A child who will fall asleep on someone's shoulder at some point after 10pm.

Ashtami: The Red-and-White Day

Maha Ashtami is the dress-up day, and in most Bengali families it means the classic lal paar sada saree register — white or ivory with a red border — for the women, with the children dressed to match. It is also the day of the anjali, held in the morning, when everyone assembles at the pandal barefoot with flowers.

For a child, the cleanest way to hit that register is ivory or white with red accents. Dashami: Sindoor Khela and the Immersion

The last day is the messiest and the most emotional. Sindoor khela leaves vermillion on everyone, the immersion procession happens at the river or the ghat, and by evening there is dhunuchi naach and a great deal of crying.

Dress children in something you have already decided you are not precious about. Red and white remain the day's colours, but this is not the day for the best outfit of the season. If a child is going anywhere near the sindoor, assume the outfit is going to carry a permanent record of it.

The Practical Rules

• Shoes they can walk kilometres in. This overrides every aesthetic consideration. Juttis are fine only if they are already broken in.
• No long dupattas on small children. In a pandal crowd, a trailing drape is a trip hazard for the child and for everyone behind them.
• Elasticated waists. Both for comfort and because the child will eat continuously for five days.
• Nothing dangling. Long jhumkas, loose ties at the back of the neck, tassels at the hem — all of it catches in a crowd.
• A change of clothes in the bag on Dashami. Non-negotiable.
• Write your phone number somewhere on the child. Kolkata pandal crowds are enormous, and this is the single most useful thing on this list.
• Something warm for late night. It cools down after midnight, and a sleeping child on a shoulder gets cold.

Coordinating Without Matching

The pujo family photograph in front of the pandal is a fixture, and the strongest ones are coordinated rather than identical. Pick one shared element — the red-and-white palette on Ashtami, or a shared colour family on the other days — and let the silhouettes differ.
