Kids' Lohri & Makar Sankranti Outfit Ideas: Bonfires, Kites and Warm Layers

Lohri and Makar Sankranti are the two most physically demanding festivals in the children's calendar. One involves standing around an open fire in January; the other involves a full day on a roof with a kite string. Both are among the best days of the year to be a child in India, and both are unusually easy to dress badly for. Here is how to get it right.

The Dates, and Why They Wobble

Makar Sankranti marks the sun's transit into Capricorn. In 2027 that transit falls late in the evening of 14 January, which means many Indian panchangs mark the observance on Friday, 15 January 2027, with Lohri celebrated on the preceding evening. Because the moment sits so close to midnight, calendars genuinely differ this year — check your family's panchang rather than assuming, particularly if you are coordinating with relatives in another state.

The names change as you travel: Lohri in Punjab, Uttarayan in Gujarat, Magh Bihu in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu. What children actually do on the day is broadly the same everywhere — fire, food, kites, and cold.

Lohri: Dressing Around an Open Fire

This is the one genuine safety conversation in children's festive dressing, and it is worth having plainly. Lohri is celebrated around a bonfire that children circle, throw popcorn and rewri into, and stand close to for warmth.

• Avoid sheer synthetics near the fire. Organza, net and polyester georgette catch and melt rather than smoulder. Natural fibres — cotton, silk, Chanderi — behave far more predictably.
• No trailing hems, no loose dupattas. If the outfit has a dupatta, pin it at the shoulder and the waist, or leave it off for the evening. A long unsecured drape near a bonfire is the single biggest hazard of the night.
• Fitted sleeves over flared ones. Wide sleeves swing forward when a child reaches, which is exactly the wrong direction.
• Layer under, not over. A thermal vest beneath the kurta keeps a child warm without a bulky jacket they will take off and lose the moment the fire is lit.

Colour-wise, Lohri is a warm-palette festival — mustard, marigold, red, rani pink. The Roshni set in cheerful mustard yellow Chanderi, hand-embroidered with aari work, is exactly the register the evening asks for, and reads beautifully against firelight. Makar Sankranti: Dressing for a Roof

Uttarayan in Gujarat and kite-flying across the north and west means children spend the day on a terrace, in bright winter sun, with a kite string. Three specific problems follow.

• Manja cuts. Kite string is coated with abrasive, and the injuries every year are to hands, forearms and necks. Full sleeves are protective clothing on this day, not a style choice — and long sleeves that reach the wrist matter more than anything else you decide.
• Sun and cold at once. January terraces are cold in the shade and hot in the sun. Layers a child can shed and re-add themselves are worth more than one perfect outfit.

For a full day outdoors, silk and Chanderi in a mid-weight are the sensible choices — warm enough for morning, breathable by noon. The Black Clothes Tradition

In Maharashtra and parts of the west, black is the traditional colour for Makar Sankranti — worn deliberately on a day when it is otherwise avoided, because dark cloth holds warmth at the coldest point of the year. Families exchange til-gul and say til-gul ghya, god god bola, and the children are usually in black with halwa ornaments.

The Layering Problem

• Thermal base layer. Invisible, effective, and it lets the outfit be the outfit. A thin merino or cotton thermal under a silk kurta is warmer than a jacket over it.
• Full-length churidar or straight pants rather than a lehenga, for evening functions outdoors.
• A shawl rather than a jacket. Easier to shed, and it does not fight the silhouette.
• Socks under juttis. Unfashionable, universally done, and the difference between a child who lasts the evening and one who does not.
