Garba Abroad: What to Wear to Navratri in the US, UK, Canada & Australia
Garba abroad is its own tradition by now. It happens in school sports halls in New Jersey, leisure centres in Leicester and Wembley, university gyms from Texas to Toronto and community halls in western Sydney. Nine nights get compressed into three weekends. The floor is polished wood marked for basketball, the singer has flown in from Ahmedabad, the aunties have brought folding chairs, and at eleven at night in October everyone walks back to the car park in mirror-work and a puffer jacket.
Most garba outfit advice is written for Gujarat in the warm. This guide is for the other garba: what to wear when the venue is a gym, the weather is cold, the outfit had to fit in a suitcase, and you will be dancing for four hours straight.
Navratri 2026 Dates
Sharad Navratri 2026 runs from Sunday, 11 October to Monday, 19 October, with Dussehra on Tuesday, 20 October. Abroad, most community garbas run on the Friday and Saturday nights either side — so expect events across the weekends of 9–10, 16–17 and sometimes 23–24 October. If your garba follows the nine colours, our day-by-day colour guide has the 2026 list.
The Four Problems Nobody Warns You About
1. The floor
Sports halls and community centres have sprung or polished floors, and many ask for shoes off or non-marking soles. A lehenga hem that skims the ground in heels will drag when you are barefoot or in flats. Judge the length in whatever you will actually dance in, and ask for the hem an inch shorter than you would for a wedding.
2. The heat inside, the cold outside
Five hundred people doing dodhiyu in a closed gym is tropical; the car park in October is not. Wear a breathable fabric to dance in and bring a proper layer for the walk — a shawl is not enough in Toronto. A blouse with sleeves you can dance in beats a strappy one you need to cover.
3. The weight
A traditional mirror-work chaniya choli with a full can-can can weigh several kilos, and you will feel every gram by the third hour. Prioritise flare over weight: a well-cut skirt in a light silk or brocade twirls better than a heavy one, and costs you nothing in the photographs.
4. The dupatta
Whatever you do, it must be secured before the first round. Pin it at the shoulder and tuck it at the waist, or choose an outfit that does not need one — a cape, a jacket or a pre-draped style. Our guide to dancing in Indian outfits has the pinning method.
What Works: Bandhani, Flare and Freedom of Movement
Bandhani — Gujarat's own tie-dye — is the natural fabric of Navratri, and it has the advantage of looking festive without needing heavy embroidery. The Mastani, Leyla & Nalini set (₹21,500) is emerald cheniya bandhani jacquard silk woven with gold and silver florals: a one-shoulder cape, a bustier and a sharara. No dupatta to manage, legs free to move, and a cape that flies when you turn. The Rumi, Akira & Vihana set (₹16,500) pairs a rani-pink dupion blouse with an orange ombre bandhani-brocade draped skirt and a sheer organza cape — the easiest thing we make to dance in. And the Suroor anarkali (₹22,775) is Bandhej Banarasi silk with woven gold bootis and full-length gathers that open out beautifully in a spin.

If you want a true lehenga, choose one built for movement. The Raanisa & Mahira lehenga (₹35,500) is sindoori-orange woven booti silk with gota, marodi and beadwork at the hem and a pleated lining that adds volume without the weight of a stiff can-can. The Ishq-e-Gul & Inara lehenga (₹37,500) is a multi-hued panelled tissue jacquard in pink, gold, peach, ivory and green — every panel catches the light differently as it turns, which is the entire point of garba.

The One-Suitcase Strategy
You do not need nine outfits. For three weekends of garba, two bases and a few changes are plenty:
- One skirt or sharara, two blouses. A change of blouse reads as a new outfit in every photograph.
- One statement dupatta. The Gulnaaz dupatta (₹8,500) is bandhani silk in a muted brown with zardozi, sequins and paisley corners — it turns a plain kurta into Navratri dress in ten seconds.
- One worked blouse. The Abeer blouse (₹11,495) is Bandhani Banarasi silk and works over a plain skirt you already own.
- Oxidised silver rather than gold — lighter, traditional for garba, and it does not matter if a piece goes missing on the dance floor.
An Honest Note on Timing
Everything we make is made to order over 4–5 weeks, plus international shipping. If you are reading this in late September 2026, a new piece will not reach you for the first weekend of garba — and we would rather tell you that than take the order. Message us on WhatsApp and we will say what, if anything, is possible for the last weekend. Otherwise the smart move is to order now for Diwali on 8 November and for the wedding season — and to put next Navratri in the calendar for August. Our international ordering guide explains timelines and measurements.
For the traditional approach to the outfit itself, see our garba and dandiya outfit guide; for dressing children, the kids' garba guide.
Made to Move In
Tell us where you are, when your garba is and what you like to dance in. We will tell you honestly what can reach you in time — and cut it to your measurements, hem length included, at no extra charge.
Shop LehengasFrequently Asked Questions
What do you wear to garba in the US or UK?
A chaniya choli or lehenga is traditional, but any festive Indian outfit you can dance in works — a sharara set, an anarkali or a skirt with a cape. Choose a light fabric with good flare, secure or skip the dupatta, check the hem length in flat shoes, and bring a warm layer for outdoors.
When is Navratri 2026?
Sharad Navratri 2026 runs from Sunday, 11 October to Monday, 19 October, with Dussehra on Tuesday, 20 October. Community garbas abroad usually run on the surrounding Friday and Saturday nights.
Can I wear shoes to garba?
It depends on the venue. Garba is traditionally danced barefoot, and many halls ask for shoes off or non-marking soles to protect the floor; others allow flats or trainers. Check with the organisers, and make sure your hem length works for whichever you will dance in.
Is it okay to wear something other than a chaniya choli?
Yes. Sharara sets, anarkalis, kurta sets with a bandhani dupatta and fusion outfits are all common at garbas abroad. Colour, movement and comfort matter more than the exact silhouette.
