What to Wear to a Telugu Wedding: A Guest's Guide

If you have been invited to a Telugu wedding and you are used to North Indian ones, prepare for two surprises. The first is the timing — the muhurtham is set by the panchangam, and the auspicious hour is frequently before sunrise. The second is the volume: a Telugu wedding is loud, long, and packed with rituals that come one after another with almost no gaps, from the Kashi Yatra to the Jeelakarra Bellam to the talambralu shower that ends with the couple flinging rice at each other's heads.

What you wear needs to survive a 4am call time, a lot of sitting, and a great deal of turmeric-adjacent activity.

The Functions, in Order

• Nischitartham. The engagement — rings, gifts, the formal fixing of the wedding date. Evening, dressy, often the most fashion-forward function of the lot.
• Pellikoduku and Pendlikoothuru. The turmeric ceremonies for the groom and bride respectively, held at their own homes. Daytime, at home, turmeric everywhere.
• Snathakam and Kashi Yatra. The groom's mock renunciation and pilgrimage-to-Kashi walkout, from which the bride's brother talks him back with the offer of the bride. Comedy, and very well attended.
• Muhurtham. The wedding proper — Jeelakarra Bellam, Kanyadaanam, Mangalsutra Dharana, Talambralu. Timed to the auspicious hour, which is often dawn or earlier.
• Appagintalu and Reception. The farewell, and the evening reception at the groom's side.

The Palette: Silk, Gold, and a Lot of Colour

Telugu wedding dressing is silk-first. Pattu sarees in Gadwal, Uppada, Pochampally, Mangalagiri, Venkatagiri, Dharmavaram and Kanjivaram are the mainstream, worn with temple jewellery, gold bangles, and jasmine in the hair. The colours are saturated and unapologetic: mango yellow, parrot green, sindoori, fuchsia, peacock blue, and gold on everything.

Let us be straightforward about what we do and do not make. We are a Jaipur hand-embroidery house — we do not weave Gadwal, Uppada or Kanjivaram. If a family pattu saree is available to you, that is the most correct thing you can wear to a muhurtham. What we make are hand-embroidered silk, Banarasi and tissue drapes in the same colour register and the same weight, which is what the rest of this guide covers.

For the Muhurtham: Woven Silk, Gold-Forward

The wedding ceremony is the most traditional function and the least forgiving. Woven silk with gold is the register.

The Rahi fuchsia Banarasi saree with Amara blouse is fuchsia pink Banarasi silk with floral motifs woven in gold thread and a detailed gold lace border, paired with a champagne stripe silk blouse — fuchsia and gold being one of the most quintessentially South Indian wedding pairings there is.

The Phalgun yellow Banarasi saree with Myra blouse is yellow Banarasi silk with floral motifs woven in silver thread and a rich lace border, paired with an ivory blouse with floral butis — mango yellow being deeply auspicious in Telugu households.

The Humrahi green silk jacquard saree with Faridah blouse has an all-over jaal with hand-embroidered floral butas and a densely embroidered palla and border, paired with a contrasting pink mulberry silk brocade blouse. Green-and-pink is a classic Telugu combination and reads correctly at a muhurtham in a way that most contemporary palettes do not.

For the Nischitartham and Reception

These are the two functions where contemporary silhouettes are entirely welcome, and where most younger guests wear something other than a saree.

The Ananya kurta with Tavishi sharara is luminous tissue in an interplay of antique gold and muted green, the bodice and sleeves in antique gold and the gathered lower panels in a soft green-toned tissue, with resham, sequin and cutdana hand embroidery. The Zehan purple silk kurta with Aabha sharara is a dense landscape of hand-done gota appliqué — metallic ribbon folded and hand-stitched into a rhombus-and-floral trellis, layered with sequins, resham and moti work.

For a saree in a more modern register, the Taraaz saree in lustrous golden-champagne tissue carries an all-over jaal of golden vines with floral bouquets in burnt orange, fuchsia and yellow, finished with an ornate navy-based border.

For the Daytime Home Functions

Pellikoduku and Pendlikoothuru involve turmeric, oil and a lot of floor seating. Wear something you do not mind staining, and something you can get up off the floor in.

The Naina ivory cotton kurta with Ahalya pant and the Pardesi cotton kurta with Amaya pant are both cotton with hand embroidery, which is exactly the right weight for a mid-morning ceremony in Hyderabad or Vijayawada. Practical Notes That Matter More Than Usual Here

• Check the muhurtham time before you plan anything. A 4:30am ceremony means dressing at 3am. Choose an outfit you can get into without help.
• You will sit on the floor. Repeatedly, and for long stretches. A very fitted skirt is a mistake.
• Talambralu means rice in your hair. Pearls and rice get flung freely. Nothing precious in your hair, nothing that traps.

• Meals are on banana leaves, seated. Wide sleeves and long trailing pallus are inconvenient.
• Avoid black. As at most South Indian ceremonies, black is generally not worn.
