What to Wear to a Palace Wedding in Udaipur or Jaipur

A palace wedding is the one Indian wedding where the venue out-dresses everybody, and understanding that is most of the job. You are going to be photographed against pink sandstone, inlaid marble, mirrored halls and a lake. Whatever you wear is competing with architecture that has been winning that competition for four hundred years, and the guests who look best are almost never the ones who tried hardest.

We work in Jaipur, and a large part of what we make goes to weddings at properties within an hour of the workshop. What follows is what we have learned watching those weekends happen.

The Dress Code Is Real Here

Palace weddings are the one category of Indian wedding where the invitation's dress code is enforced, sometimes literally — planners send colour palettes, and at the higher end there are people at the door. "Ivory and gold for the mehendi", "jewel tones for the sangeet", "pastels for the day two brunch". Take it seriously. The second rule is that these weddings run to a schedule, because the venue is charging by the hour and the lighting has been designed for a specific time. Arriving late to a sunset ceremony on a lake means missing the ceremony.

The Venue Is the Constraint

• Stairs. A great many stairs. Palaces are vertical and the lifts, where they exist, are small and busy. A floor-length lehenga with no hand free is a genuine problem across a weekend.
• Marble and sandstone are slippery. Polished marble floors plus smooth-soled heels plus a long hem is how people fall at weddings. Block heels.
• Boat transfers in Udaipur. If the wedding is at a lake property, you will be getting in and out of a boat, in the wind, possibly in spray. Voluminous and unpinned is the wrong call.
• Courtyards are outdoors. Most palace functions happen in open courtyards, which means daytime heat from March to October and real cold on winter nights.
• Everything is a photograph. Professional photographers, drone shots, and a room full of people who came for exactly this. There is no low-effort function at a palace wedding.

Colour Against Sandstone and Marble

This is the part people get wrong. The instinct is to wear pastels because they photograph beautifully — and they do, at dusk. At noon in a sandstone courtyard, a pale blush outfit and a pale pink wall produce a photograph in which you are barely present.

• Against pink and red sandstone — Jaipur, Jodhpur's forts, Agra — go for contrast: emerald, royal blue, deep purple, ivory with strong gold. Avoid blush, peach and terracotta, which disappear.
• Against white marble and mirror work — Udaipur's lake properties, Sheesh Mahals — almost anything works, and this is where jewel tones and deep colours genuinely sing.
• Against a lake at sunset — the pastels finally earn their keep. Gold, champagne, ivory and soft rose are made for that hour.
• Gold over silver, always. The whole palette of these venues is warm — sandstone, brass, candlelight, marigold. Cool silver fights it.
• Red stays the bride's on the wedding day, as everywhere.

The Rehmat lehenga with Vasl choli is the piece made for this specific room: Varanasi silk brocade in rich red, with floral motifs drawn from the inlay designs seen in Rajputana and Mughal architecture, adorned with gold zari throughout and finished with a broad gold border. It is, quite literally, the building's own vocabulary rendered in cloth — and for a sangeet or reception, where red carries no bridal claim, it is unanswerable.

Outfits by Function

The welcome lunch and the mehendi

Daytime, outdoors, usually in a courtyard or garden, usually hot. This is the function to be light for, and the one where a heavy piece is actively a mistake.

The Leela chanderi kurta with Sifat pant carries a stylised floral jaal into a bold leaf motif at the hem in gota patti, sequins, resham and bead work — craft that reads as Rajasthani, in a fabric a courtyard at noon will forgive. The sangeet

Evening, lit, and the function with the most dancing. Volume works here; so does anything that catches light.

The Mastani cape with Leyla bustier and Nalini sharara in emerald cheniya bandhani jacquard silk — a one-shoulder cape over a strap bustier and sharara — is the contemporary answer, and a sharara handles a dance floor considerably better than a lehenga. The Ishq-e-Gul lehenga with Inara blouse in soft tissue jacquard, its multi-hued panels in pink, gold, peach, ivory and green each edged with fine sequin lines, is the one that moves.

The ceremony and the reception

The heaviest pieces belong here — and at a winter palace wedding the pheras are frequently after midnight, outdoors, in genuine cold.

The Nyassa blouse with Elina lehenga in luminous rose tissue has the metallic glow that marble and candlelight reward. The Bano lehenga with Dilruba blouse in soft pistachio silk tissue, with a voluminous flare and a wide embroidered border of roses and vines, is the quieter, more unusual choice in a room where half the guests will be in red or gold.

Seven Practical Notes

• Block heels, not stilettos. Marble, sandstone, gravel courtyards, boats and a great many stairs. This is the most commonly regretted decision at a palace wedding.
• Winter nights are cold. November to February in Rajasthan means single figures after midnight. A shawl you are happy to be photographed in, planned as part of the outfit.

• Pin everything. Courtyards, lake breezes and boat transfers make short work of an unpinned dupatta or pallu.

• Pack for the photographs you did not plan for. There is always an unscheduled rooftop or stepwell shoot. One extra good outfit is never wasted at a palace wedding.
