Sequin & Cutdana Embroidered Outfits: Handcrafted Indian Wear

Sequin and cutdana work bring sparkle and dimension to Indian garments in a way no other technique can. While sequins add flat shimmer, cutdana — hand-cut glass tubes — create a textured, multifaceted sparkle that is distinctly Indian. Our karigars combine these techniques with precision to create pieces that catch light from every angle.

The Art of Sequin & Cutdana Embroidery

Sequin embellishment in Indian fashion evolved from the ancient tradition of mirror work. Cutdana — derived from "cut" (to cut) and "dana" (grain/bead) — involves hand-cutting glass tubes into small cylindrical beads that are then stitched individually onto fabric. This technique originated in Lucknow and has been perfected by artisans over centuries. Each cutdana bead catches light differently, creating a sparkling effect that is more subtle and dimensional than flat sequins.

How Sequin & Cutdana Work Is Done

Our karigars hand-stitch each sequin and cutdana individually — there is no machine shortcut for this work. Cutdana beads are positioned at precise angles to maximise light reflection. The density and pattern of placement determine whether the effect is subtle shimmer or dramatic sparkle. Combined with thread work and zari, sequin and cutdana embroidery creates multi-textured surfaces that photographs cannot fully capture.

Styling Sequin & Cutdana Embroidered Outfits

Sequin and cutdana work pieces are natural showstoppers — they need minimal jewellery. For evening events, the sparkle catches artificial light beautifully. For a balanced look, pair a heavily embellished top or blouse with a simpler bottom, or vice versa.

These pieces photograph exceptionally well — the light play creates beautiful images for social media and wedding photography. Choose them for events where you know there will be good lighting and lots of photos.

Care Instructions for Sequin & Cutdana Work

Handle with extra care — sequins and cutdana can catch on other fabrics. Store separately in a soft bag. Dry clean only. When ironing, never press directly on the embellished side — always iron on reverse with a thick pressing cloth. Avoid pulling threads that attach sequins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between sequin and cutdana work?
Sequins are flat, disc-shaped embellishments. Cutdana are hand-cut cylindrical glass tubes. Cutdana creates more dimensional, textured sparkle compared to the flat shimmer of sequins.

Is sequin work heavy?
Moderately — but our karigars balance embellishment density to keep pieces wearable. Lighter sequin work on organza is surprisingly comfortable.

Are sequin outfits only for weddings?
Light sequin work is perfect for festivals, dinner parties, and evening celebrations. Reserve heavy all-over sequin pieces for weddings and receptions.
