If you are going to a Goan or Mangalorean Catholic wedding, you will need three quite different outfits. For the roce, wear something old and washable, because you will be near coconut milk and oil and, in some families, raw eggs. For the nuptial Mass, dress as you would for church: shoulders covered, nothing short or sheer, and nothing white, because white belongs to the bride. For the reception, dress up properly and dress to dance. A chiffon saree, a cape set or an Indo-western drape is exactly right, and the night will run late.

Goan Catholics and Mangalorean Catholics are closely related. Most Mangalorean Catholics descend from Goan Christians who moved south down the coast between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, and both communities still speak Konkani. Their weddings share a skeleton: banns, an anointing with coconut milk, a church wedding and a reception with a live band. Details differ by community, parish and family, so treat this as a map rather than a rulebook. This guide is about the Catholic wedding. A Konkani Hindu wedding in Goa or Mangaluru is a different occasion, and our Konkani wedding guide covers it. If the wedding is in Kerala, read our Syrian Christian wedding guide instead.

First, an Honest Note on What We Make

At a Goan wedding in particular, many women guests wear Western gowns and dresses, and the men wear suits. We do not make gowns, cocktail dresses or menswear. We make sarees, kurta sets, sharara sets and Indo-western cape sets, and they sit very comfortably at these weddings, where sarees are worn in church and at the reception alike. We do not weave either. The Mangalorean bride's traditional red sado is a woven Banarasi silk, and we buy our handwoven cloth and embroider it rather than weave it. Everything below is a piece we actually make, described as it is.

Banns and the Chuddo

A Catholic wedding begins in the parish weeks before the day. The banns, the public announcement of the marriage, are read in church on three Sundays. In Goa, the bride's chuddo traditionally follows. This is a gathering at her maternal uncle's house where glass bangles are slipped onto her wrists to songs. The colours vary by family; red, green, white and yellow are all mentioned in Goan accounts.

If you are invited, it is a home occasion in daylight. Wear something festive but easy. The Gia & Cyraa set (₹28,500) is a vibrant lime-green silk kurta with matching straight pants, embroidered at the neckline, sleeves and hem in rose gold and deep fuchsia with marodi, gota, sequins and thread work.

The Roce: Wear Something You Can Wash

The roce (also spelt ros; the Konkani word means juice, here the milk of the coconut) is held a day or two before the wedding, or on its eve. The bride and the groom each have their own, at their own family homes. It is the community's anointing ritual. Elders bless the bride or groom and anoint them with coconut oil and fresh coconut milk, and afterwards they take a ritual bath. In Mangalorean homes the elder conducting it traditionally marks a cross in oil on the forehead before the coconut milk is applied. The women sing voviyo (also written voyos), short wedding songs, some solemn and some cheerfully teasing the couple.

Then it gets messy. Goan accounts describe guests cracking eggs over the wedding party; Mangalorean ones describe beer, eggs and anything else the cousins can find, then dancing well into the night. If you are close to the bride or groom, assume something will land on you.

So, honestly: do not wear anything hand-embroidered to the roce, ours included. Coconut oil is hard to get out of silk, and egg is worse. Wear cotton you already own and can put through a washing machine, and keep your hair simple. If the roce turns into a dinner and a party afterwards, as many now do, bring a change. The Sia kaftan (₹5,500) is terracotta satin with lace at the V-neckline and sleeve and side slits for ease, and it packs into a bag with no fuss.

The Nuptial Mass: Covered, Coloured, Never White

The wedding itself is a nuptial Mass in the parish church. The couple make their vows, the registers are signed, and the church bells ring as they leave. In Goa, it is customary in many families for the groom's mother to give the bride a gold chain and place the saddo on her shoulder. This is a red sari or dress, and the bride wears it when the couple visit her family the following day.

For guests, there are two rules, and both matter more than what you wear.

  • Dress for a church. Goa's best-known churches, the Basilica of Bom Jesus among them, ask visitors to cover their shoulders and knees. Hold yourself to the same standard at a wedding Mass, whatever the parish. Avoid strappy or backless blouses, deep necklines, short hems and anything sheer that is not lined. If you love a blouse that breaks these rules, save it for the reception and carry a dupatta or stole.
  • Do not wear white. The Goan bride almost always wears a white gown. Many Mangalorean brides do now too, although some still wear the sado to church, and white saris were once worn to the nuptial blessing. Either way, keep away from white, ivory and anything that could be mistaken for cream in a photograph.

Soft colour suits a morning or midday church: blush, rose, pistachio, powder blue, champagne gold. The Saher & Naazli set (₹32,500) is a soft rose-pink silk kurta with a scoop neckline and three-quarter sleeves. An ornate medallion sits at the bodice and circular floral butis are scattered across it, in green, orange and pink resham with mirror work, sequins and bead work, over a matching straight pant. It is covered enough for any church and festive enough for lunch afterwards.

If you would rather wear a saree, choose a light one and give it a blouse with real sleeves. The Sajni saree (₹21,000) is blush-pink chiffon scattered with hand-embroidered floral clusters in sequins, cutdana and bead work, finished with a scalloped border. The blouse is sold separately, so pair it with the Ziya blouse (₹6,500). That is a jewel-toned silk with a round neckline and full-length sleeves, embroidered with tonal sequin vines, and it takes care of the church rule without a stole. If you want a cover-up anyway, the Afsana dupatta (₹10,500) is periwinkle organza silk with marodi, resham and sequin bootis. It is light enough to sit on your shoulders through a long Mass.

Our Indian Christian wedding guest guide goes further on church dressing.

The Reception: Dress to Dance

This is the part of the wedding guests remember. A Goan reception usually means a live band and ballroom dancing. The couple's first dance is often a waltz, the cake is cut, and the toast, the saude, is raised to the couple, traditionally with toast songs in Konkani. Mangalorean receptions add their own customs. After the first dance, the women of the family take the bride away to change from her white gown into the red sado, singing as they dress her. When she returns, the groom ties the karyamani, a necklace of black and gold beads. The band plays Western music and baila, and close family traditionally sing the Latin hymn Laudate before the evening ends.

That tells you two things about dressing. First, you will be dancing, for hours, so your outfit has to move and your shoes have to last. Second, at a Mangalorean reception, the bride will be in red and gold for the second half of the evening. A red-and-gold Banarasi saree on a guest will look like a rival sado, so choose another colour.

Chiffon is the reception fabric we would reach for first. It is light in coastal humidity, drapes cleanly and can be pinned securely for the dance floor. The Teya saree (₹32,500) is bold fuchsia chiffon crossed by fine horizontal lines of zari, resham and bead embroidery, with an ornate scalloped border at the pallu and hem. The Aashiqui saree (₹37,295) is deep royal blue chiffon with hand-embroidered sequin and cutdana florals and scattered leafy accents, a colour that looks wonderful under a band's lights.

Black is generally fine at a Christian reception, and it is often the chicest thing in the room. Wear it to the evening rather than to the Mass. The Chandni saree (₹22,500) is black chiffon with vertical lines of sequins and cutdana along the border and subtle butas across the body. Our guide to wearing black covers how to keep it festive.

If the Room Is Full of Gowns

At a Goan reception, most women may be in gowns. An Indo-western set lets you fit that room without giving up handwork.

  • The Rang, Sasha & Tasha cape set (₹19,250) is the closest thing we make to an evening gown. It has a sheer black organza cape embroidered with multicolour floral vines in sequins and cutdana, a black silk blouse with angled pleats and straps, and a georgette draped skirt ruched at the waist. The cape covers the straps, which helps if you are going straight from church.
  • The Shabnam kaftan and sharara (₹21,750) is navy satin with a one-shoulder, saree-inspired drape. Its neckline and curved edge are embroidered in gold and ivory with sequins, cutdana, moti and aari, and it comes over a generously flared sharara. It is a reception piece only, given the bare shoulder.
  • The Madhubala, Izhaar & Aina set (₹19,750) is dusty plum. It pairs a sheer organza cape scattered with floral bootis in ivory, rose, turquoise and gold with a ruched silk blouse and a fluid dhoti pant. It is ideal if you plan to dance all night and would rather not manage a pallu.

The Day After: Apovnnem and Portoponn

In Goa, the celebrations do not end with the reception. The day after the wedding, the bride's family invites the groom's family in a visit called apovnnem or portoponn, and the bride wears her red saddo. In some families, trays of sweets (vojem) go out to family and neighbours as thanks. If you are close enough to be invited, it is a relaxed daytime visit. TheRasiya & Misri set (₹12,500) is a coral-pink mulberry brocade silk kurta with gold-thread floral embroidery at the V-neck, sleeves and hem, over a matching pant.

Four Things Worth Knowing

  • The coast is humid. Goa and Mangaluru are warm for most of the year, and churches and halls can be close. Choose chiffon, organza, Chanderi or light silk over heavy embroidery. Our lightweight wedding outfits guide helps.
  • Carry a cover-up to church. A dupatta or stole solves most dress-code problems in seconds.
  • Bring dancing shoes. Block heels or embellished flats, and something comfortable in your bag for later.
  • Ask which functions you are invited to. The chuddo, the roce and the apovnnem are usually family occasions; the Mass and the reception are where most guests appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a guest wear to a Goan Catholic wedding?

For the church Mass, something modest and coloured, with shoulders and knees covered and nothing white, ivory or cream. A saree with a sleeved blouse, a kurta set or a modest dress all work. For the reception, dress up and dress to dance. Gowns, chiffon sarees and Indo-western cape sets are all common. For the roce, wear old, washable clothes.

What is the roce ceremony?

The roce (or ros) is the pre-wedding anointing ceremony of Goan and Mangalorean Catholics, held a day or two before the wedding at the bride's and groom's homes separately. Elders bless them and anoint them with coconut oil and coconut milk while women sing traditional songs, followed by a ritual bath. In many families it ends in playful mess and a party.

What is the sado or saddo?

Among Mangalorean Catholics, the sado is the bride's traditional red wedding saree, usually a Banarasi silk, which many brides now change into after the first dance at the reception. In Goa, the saddo is a red sari or dress given to the bride by the groom's family on the wedding day and worn when the couple visit her family the next day.

Can I wear black to a Goan or Mangalorean wedding?

At the evening reception, black is generally fine and often very elegant. For the church Mass, softer celebratory colours are the safer choice. White and ivory are the colours to avoid, since the bride usually wears a white gown.

Is it fine to wear a saree to a Goan wedding when most guests wear gowns?

Yes. Sarees are entirely at home at Goan and Mangalorean Catholic weddings, both in church and at the reception. Choose a light drape such as chiffon that you can pin securely for dancing, and wear a sleeved blouse or carry a stole for the Mass.
