What to Wear to a Kannada Wedding: A Guest's Guide from Nischitartha to the Morning Muhurtha
If you are going to a Kannada wedding, the short answer is: wear silk, wear colour, and set an alarm. Most Kannada Hindu weddings are built around a muhurtha in the early morning, which means the most important outfit of the wedding is one you will be putting on in the dark. A silk saree in a rich, clear colour with a well-fitted blouse, or a festive silk kurta set, is right for the ceremony; save the shimmer and chiffon for the reception.
This guide walks a guest through a Karnataka Hindu wedding function by function: the nischitartha, the naandi and arishina, the kashi yatre, the dhare, the saptapadi and the reception. Karnataka is a big state with many communities, and Vokkaliga, Lingayat, Brahmin (Madhwa and Smartha), Bunt and other families each do things their own way, so treat this as a map rather than a rulebook, and ask your hosts which functions you are invited to.
First, an Honest Note About Mysore Silk and Ilkal
Karnataka has two sarees every guest should know about. Mysore silk is pure mulberry silk woven by the state-owned Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation in Mysuru, in a factory founded in 1912 under the Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV. It is protected by a geographical indication, it is known for a plain, lustrous body with a zari border, and its zari is real metal, commonly cited as about 65% silver with a fraction of a percent of gold. Ilkal sarees, from the town of Ilkal in north Karnataka, also carry a GI tag. They are recognisable by a cotton body with a silk border and pallu, joined by an interlocking loop technique called tope teni, often with a red-and-white striped pallu.
We do not weave either, and we would not pretend to. If you want a Mysore silk, buy it from KSIC's own showrooms, where each saree carries a hologram and a unique code; if you want an Ilkal, buy it from the weavers of Ilkal. What we can do is make the blouse. A hand-embroidered blouse cut to your measurements is the fastest way to make a Mysore silk look like it was made for this wedding, and it is where a lot of our work goes in wedding season (more on that below).
Nischitartha: The Engagement
The nischitartha (in some families, nischaya tamboola) is the formal engagement. Horoscopes have been matched, and the two families exchange trays of betel leaves, betel nuts, coconuts, fruit and sweets to seal the match; the bride is usually given a saree and the groom a dhoti, and in most modern weddings the couple exchange rings. It is often held at home or in a small hall, some months before the wedding.
This is a family gathering in daylight, so dress as for a festive puja: silk, colour, covered shoulders. The Jhoomar & Shafaq set (₹22,500) is a green silk kurta embroidered with marodi, sequins and bead work in floral vines and jaal, with a vivid pink neckline and cuffs. Green with a pink edge is about as Karnataka-wedding as a colour story gets.
Naandi, Bale Shastra and Arishina
In the days before the wedding, each family performs the naandi, a puja asking for the ceremonies to go smoothly, with a kalasha of water topped with a coconut. Many families hold a bale shastra, an intimate bangle ceremony in which married women slip glass bangles, typically red and green, onto the bride's wrists. Then comes arishina, the turmeric ceremony, when a paste of turmeric, oil and milk is applied to the bride and groom, followed by the ritual bath, mangala snana.
Arishina is the one function where yellow is the obvious answer, and where you should wear something you will not mind being marked. The Ziya & Saaz set (₹14,500) is a sunflower-yellow silk kurta with side-slit sleeves and a floral bel embroidered at the hem in marodi, sequins and thread work in pink and wine, over a matching churidaar; its own description calls it ideal for haldi gatherings. For something lighter, the Afreen & Maahi set (₹15,875) is sunshine-yellow Chanderi scattered with hand-embroidered flowers in cutdana and bead work. Our haldi outfit guide has more.

The Wedding Morning: Kashi Yatre
The wedding day begins early. Before the main rituals, the groom performs the kashi yatre: carrying an umbrella and dressed for the road, he announces that he is renouncing worldly life and setting off on pilgrimage to Kashi. The bride's father (in some families her brother, in some tellings the groom's uncle) stops him and persuades him to stay and marry instead. It is played for laughs, and it is one of the best moments to photograph.
The groom is usually in a white or cream silk dhoti with an angavastra, often with a Mysore peta, the region's turban. The bride will almost always be in a silk saree, with Kanjeevaram and Mysore silk both common, heavy gold jewellery and jasmine in her hair.
The Muhurtha: Dhare, Mangalya and Saptapadi
At the mandap, the groom is honoured by the bride's family in the vara puja. The bride then arrives, often with a cloth held between the two until the moment they first see each other, and they exchange garlands. Then comes the heart of a Kannada wedding, the dhare (dhare eredu or dhare herdu). The bride's right hand is placed in the groom's, a coconut and betel leaf are placed on their joined hands, and her parents pour water over them in a steady stream, the dhare, as they give her in marriage. The groom ties the mangalsutra, the couple walk the saptapadi, the seven steps around the sacred fire, and in many families they are shown the Arundhati star as a symbol of fidelity. Lingayat weddings, presided over by the community's own priests, differ in important ways, and many do not include a saptapadi at all.
This is the moment to wear silk. Most Kannada families love colour at a wedding: deep greens, pinks, oranges, purples and golds all read as festive, and guests in silk sarees are the norm rather than the exception. Many families still avoid black and plain white on the day.
We would build the look around a woven silk. The Humrahi & Faridah sari (₹34,500) is green silk jacquard with an all-over jaal, hand-embroidered floral butas and a densely embroidered palla and border, with a contrasting pink mulberry silk brocade blouse, a combination that would be at home in any kalyana mantapa in Bengaluru. The Rahi & Amara sari (₹24,500) is fuchsia-pink Banarasi silk with floral motifs woven in gold thread and a gold lace border, paired with a champagne-stripe silk blouse. For a softer palette, the Phalgun & Myra sari (₹27,500) is yellow Banarasi silk with silver-woven florals and a rich lace border, with an ivory blouse scattered with embroidered floral butis. To be accurate: we do not weave Banarasi either; the cloth is handwoven, and our work is the blouse and the embroidery. Our Banarasi vs Kanjeevaram guide explains how the two weaves differ.

Already Own a Mysore Silk? Change the Blouse
Plenty of guests will already have a Mysore silk or a Kanjeevaram in the cupboard, often an heirloom. The cleverest way to wear it to a new wedding is with a new blouse. Because a Mysore silk usually has a plain body and a zari border, an embroidered blouse does a lot of work. Every blouse below is made to order and cut to your measurements at no extra charge.
- The Ojasvi blouse (₹18,500) is champagne-gold brocade with a V-neck, a square tie-up back with tassels, and florals in marodi, gold zari, resham and beadwork. It is the obvious partner for a gold-bordered silk in almost any colour.
- The Gulzaib blouse (₹19,250) is rani-pink silk with broad straps, covered front and back in multicolour resham florals, paisleys and leafy trails. It is perfect against a green, orange or purple saree.
- The Abeer blouse (₹11,495) is Bandhani Banarasi silk with a wide V-neck and short sleeves, embroidered with paisley and floral motifs in sequins, cutdana and resham.

The Reception
Many Kannada weddings add a reception, sometimes the evening before the muhurtha and sometimes after, so check your invitation. This is where the evening glamour belongs: chiffon, lighter drapes, a lehenga if you like. The Teya saree (₹32,500) is fuchsia chiffon with fine horizontal lines of zari, resham and beadwork and a scalloped border at the pallu and hem (blouse ordered separately). If you would rather wear a lehenga, the Raanisa & Mahira lehenga (₹35,500) is sindoori-orange woven booti silk with gota, marodi, bead and thread work at the hem and a pleated lining for movement.
Five Things Worth Knowing
- Plan for an early start. A dawn or early-morning muhurtha means hair and make-up in the dark. Choose a drape you can manage quickly, or have your saree pre-pleated. Our daytime wedding guide helps with the light.
- Silk is the dress code, even when nobody says so. A silk saree or silk set reads as respect.
- Wear flowers. Jasmine in the hair is everywhere at a Karnataka wedding; see our gajra guide.
- Expect a banana-leaf meal. Lunch is traditionally served on banana leaves, sometimes with guests seated on the floor, so avoid anything you cannot sit down in.
- Leave the bride's colours to her. Keep away from anything that looks bridal, and from black and plain white unless the family says otherwise.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should a guest wear to a Kannada wedding?
A silk saree in a rich colour with a well-fitted blouse is the classic choice for the muhurtha, and a festive silk kurta set works too. Yellow suits the arishina (haldi), and chiffon, lighter sarees or a lehenga suit the reception. Many families avoid black and plain white on the wedding day.
What is dhare in a Kannada wedding?
Dhare (dhare eredu or dhare herdu) is the Kannada form of kanyadaan. The bride's hand is placed in the groom's, a coconut and betel leaf are set on their joined hands, and her parents pour a stream of water over them as they give her in marriage.
What is kashi yatre?
A playful ritual on the wedding morning in which the groom, carrying an umbrella, pretends to renounce the world and leave for pilgrimage to Kashi. The bride's father (or, in some families, another relative) persuades him to stay and marry instead.
Why are Kannada weddings held in the morning?
The wedding is fixed around an auspicious muhurtha chosen from the couple's horoscopes, and for most Kannada families that falls at dawn or in the early morning. Guests should plan to be dressed and at the venue early, and the reception usually carries the evening dressing.
Can I wear a Mysore silk saree to a Kannada wedding as a guest?
Yes, and it is one of the most appropriate things you can wear. Buy it from KSIC, whose sarees carry a hologram and unique code. Because Mysore silk usually has a plain body with a zari border, pairing it with an embroidered, made-to-measure blouse makes it feel dressed up for the occasion.
