Karthigai Deepam Outfit Ideas: What to Wear for the Festival of Lamps

Rows of agal vilakku along every doorstep, the smell of ghee and wick, pori urundai and appam in the kitchen, and — if you're anywhere near Tiruvannamalai — a single enormous flame on top of a hill that can be seen for miles. Karthigai Deepam is the oldest festival of lights in the Tamil calendar, older than the Diwali most of India celebrates, and it has a mood entirely its own: devotional rather than exuberant, gold rather than glitter.

When Karthigai Deepam Falls in 2026

Karthigai Deepam 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24 November — the full moon day of the Tamil month of Karthigai, when the moon aligns with the Karthigai nakshatra. The Tamil month itself runs from 17 November to 15 December 2026, and at Tiruvannamalai the festival is observed as a ten-day Brahmotsavam culminating in the Maha Deepam lit on the summit of Arunachala.

It shares its date with Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali in the north — the same full moon, observed very differently.

The Palette Is Gold, Not Glitter

Karthigai Deepam dresses closer to a temple day than a party. Traditional Tamil festive dressing leads with silk in warm, deep tones — mustard, ochre, deep green, maroon, and above all ivory or cream with gold — and the shine comes from zari rather than from sequins and mirror work.

The Phalgun yellow Banarasi silk sari, with intricate floral motifs woven in silver thread and a rich lace border, paired with the ivory Myra blouse with its rounded neckline and delicate sequin work, sits well in this register — a woven-shine saree rather than an embellished one.

For the ivory-and-gold route that suits a lamp-lit evening particularly well, the Bano ivory moonga zari silk saree carries fine sequin work in intricate floral motifs with delicate gold embroidery and a rich border. And for deeper colour, the Humrahi green silk jacquard sari — an all-over jaal punctuated with hand-embroidered floral butas, a densely embroidered palla and border, and a contrasting pink mulberry silk brocade blouse — has the weight and richness a Karthigai evening takes.

A note of honesty: the classic Karthigai drape is a Kanjivaram, and that is a specific South Indian weave we don't make. What we do make are hand-embroidered silk drapes in the same tonal family — a different tradition, worn to the same occasion.

Dressing Around Open Flame

This is the one festival where fire safety genuinely belongs in a styling guide. Karthigai Deepam means dozens of oil lamps at floor level, along thresholds, on balcony ledges and around the courtyard, lit and re-lit through the evening — and the person lighting most of them is usually in a saree.

• Pin the pallu, properly. A loose pallu at knee height over a row of lit lamps is the single most common accident of the evening.
• Avoid sheer synthetics near flame. Silk and cotton behave far better than polyester chiffon.
• Tie hair back. You'll be bending over lamps repeatedly.
• Keep sleeves fitted rather than flared if you're the one doing the lighting.
• Skip trailing dupattas entirely for the lamp-lighting hour, then drape freely afterwards.

If You're Going to the Temple

Karthigai Deepam is a temple-heavy festival, and Tamil temples in particular are strict. Covered shoulders, covered knees, and — at many temples, especially in Tamil Nadu — a preference for traditional dress over Indo-western. A saree or a full-length kurta set with a dupatta is the reliable answer.

Expect stone floors, bare feet, long queues and considerable crowds, particularly at Tiruvannamalai where the girivalam draws enormous numbers on Deepam night. A Lighter Option for the Home Evening

Not everybody wants to spend a full evening in a silk saree, and there's no requirement to. A silk or Chanderi kurta set in a warm festive tone is entirely appropriate for a home Karthigai, and considerably easier if you're the one making the pori urundai. The Alfia kurta in rich Banarasi fabric with gold floral bootis, cut in a relaxed silhouette, gets the woven-gold effect without the drape.

What the Children Wear

Children are usually given a lamp each and supervised closely, which makes the fabric choice easy: cotton or silk, nothing sheer, nothing trailing, sleeves rather than sleeveless. The Faiza kids kurta in soft gold silk with three-quarter sleeves and gota and thread work in subtle rose and coral tones is a good fit for the palette and the practicality. The Raas kurta in silk, with tonal diagonal lines woven through the base and multicolour embroidery drawn from traditional phool-patti motifs, is the warmer-toned alternative.
