What Should Kids Wear to Perform at the Sangeet?
Every sangeet has one guaranteed showstopper, and it is never the choreographed couple dance — it is the six-year-old who has practised her steps for three weeks and performs them with the seriousness of a state occasion. If a child in your family has been given a slot in the sangeet lineup, the outfit question matters more than it does for any adult performer: it has to move, it has to survive rehearsals, and it has to make them feel wonderful. Here is how to get it right.
The Three Rules of a Performance Outfit
- It must twirl. Ask any child what makes an outfit good and they will show you, by spinning. Shararas and lehengas with real flare are the performance silhouettes; narrow pants are for the audience.
- Nothing can come loose mid-song. Trailing dupattas, slipping straps and heavy drapes are choreography hazards. Fix the dupatta down, or drop it for the performance and return it for photos.
- They must forget they are wearing it. Scratchy linings and tight armholes end careers at the first rehearsal. Breathable fabric and room to move are non-negotiable — a performance outfit is sportswear in silk.

For rehearsals, any comfortable set with a similar flare does the job — the child learns how the outfit moves without wearing it out. A final dress rehearsal in the actual outfit, once, tells you everything: whether the waistband holds a spin, whether the sleeves allow the arm move, whether anyone needs a safety pin. Fix all of it two days before, not backstage.
Backstage Notes for Parents
- Hair first, outfit second — getting a lehenga over a finished hairstyle is how flowers end up on the floor.
- Feed them before dressing them. Obvious. Forgotten every single time.
- Pack the kit: safety pins, a snack that is not orange, and flat footwear they have actually danced in — new shoes on performance night is a classic error.
