Ayudha Puja & Saraswati Puja Outfit Ideas: What to Wear in the South

In the South, the ninth day of Navratri is the day everything gets put down. Books are stacked in front of the goddess. Veenas and mridangams are laid out. Laptops, scissors, cameras, cars, the sewing machine, the kitchen knives — anything you work with — are cleaned, garlanded with sandal paste and kumkum, and left untouched for a day. Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja happen together, and they are the quietest, most domestic day of the whole nine.

The 2026 Dates

Ayudha Puja and Saraswati Puja fall on Monday, 19 October 2026, on Mahanavami. Vijayadashami follows on Tuesday, 20 October — the day the tools are picked up again, and the day children are traditionally started on their first lesson in the Vidyarambham ceremony.

In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka the display of dolls — Golu in Tamil Nadu, Bombe Habba in Karnataka — has been up since the first day of Navratri, and the ninth evening is when it peaks, with visitors arriving through the evening for kolam, sundal and tambulam.

This Is a Silk Saree Day

Of the nine days, this is the one where the traditional register is strongest. Ayudha Puja is a home puja followed by a stream of visitors, and in most South Indian households that means a silk saree — Kanjivaram, Mysore silk, or a fine Banarasi — with jasmine in the hair, temple jewellery, and kumkum.

An honest note first: we do not weave Kanjivaram or Mysore silk. What we do make are hand-embroidered silk, Banarasi and tissue drapes in the same register — traditional weight, gold-forward, made to be worn to a puja rather than to a party. If Kanjivaram is what the day calls for in your family, wear the Kanjivaram. What follows is for anyone who wants something in that spirit but not that exact weave.

Gold Is the Colour of the Day

Saraswati is worshipped in white and gold across most of the South, and the gold of the day comes from lamps, brass vessels and zari. Antique gold reads as more traditional than bright gold, and photographs far better under the warm light of a puja room.

The Taraana saree is luminous tissue in a soft antique gold, embroidered entirely in vibrant resham threads — floral and paisley vine motifs along the borders and pallu, with delicate bootis scattered across the body and a fine line of sequins along the border edge. It sits exactly at the intersection of festive and reverent.

The Taraaz saree is lustrous tissue in a golden-champagne hue, with an all-over jaal of slender golden vines punctuated by floral bouquets hand-embroidered in burnt orange, fuchsia and yellow, and an ornate navy-based border at the hem and pallu.

Ivory and White for Saraswati

If you want to dress specifically to Saraswati rather than to the festival generally, white and ivory with gold is the classic. The Bano moonga zari silk saree with Siya blouse is ivory moonga zari silk with fine sequin work in floral motifs, delicate gold embroidery and a rich border — paired with a blouse in golden polka dots with embroidery at the neckline and sleeves.

The Shanvi saree is soft ivory organza with a hand-embroidered border running the full length of the drape in marodi, gold zari, resham and beadwork in coral and gold, finished with a metallic trim and tassels at the pallu corners.

Banarasi Silk If You Want Weight

For those who find tissue and organza too light for a puja, woven silk is the alternative. The Zariya saree is a soft mint green Banarasi with diagonal bands of sequins and gota in antique gold and a fine pink selvedge. The Phalgun Banarasi saree with Myra blouse is yellow Banarasi silk with floral motifs woven in silver thread and a rich lace border — yellow being an auspicious colour for Saraswati across most of India.

The Humrahi green silk jacquard saree with Faridah blouse has an all-over jaal punctuated with hand-embroidered floral butas and a densely embroidered palla and border, paired with a contrasting pink mulberry silk brocade blouse — green being the traditional Navami colour in much of the South.

If a Saree Is Not Practical

Ayudha Puja involves a great deal of moving — cleaning and arranging the tools, laying out the golu steps, cooking sundal, receiving visitors from mid-morning to late evening. Plenty of women in the family wear a silk kurta set instead, and nobody minds.

The Vanya kurta with Bani pant in warm beige silk has appliqué Guldasta motifs at the neckline in dusty rose and peach resham with nakshi and zardozi — understated and ceremonial at once. The Mirza ivory silk kurta with Raina pant carries zardozi floral and vine motifs in gold and pink with a rounded split neckline, which is a straightforward substitute for an ivory-and-gold saree.

What to Get Right

• Cover the shoulders and midriff modestly. This is a home puja with elders and visitors, not an evening function.
• Jasmine in the hair. In most South Indian homes this is not optional on Ayudha Puja day, and it costs almost nothing.
• Temple jewellery over contemporary. Jhumkas, a simple gold chain, bangles. Our accessorising guide covers the balance.
• Bare feet. You will be in and out of the puja room all day, so nothing complicated on your feet.
• Avoid black entirely. It is genuinely frowned upon on this day in most South Indian households.
• You will be sitting on the floor. Cross-legged, repeatedly. Check that the drape and the blouse allow it.

The following day is when the tools are taken back up, and it is considered the most auspicious day of the year to begin something — an instrument, a language, a business, a child's first letters. It is a step brighter than the puja day: this is where the red, the deep pink and the sindoori come out.
