The tissue saree is the one that makes a room go quiet. It does not sparkle the way sequins do — it glows, as though the fabric were lit from inside, because a metallic yarn is woven into the cloth itself rather than stitched on top. For two wedding seasons running it has been the saree on every mood board, and the reason is simple: nothing else looks this festive while weighing this little.

It is also a fabric where the word on the label tells you very little. This is a guide to the best tissue saree brands in India in 2026, how to tell woven tissue from the lurex-polyester sold under the same name, and — with our interest stated plainly — the hand-embroidered tissue we make in Jaipur.

First: What Tissue Actually Is

Tissue is a weave in which a metallic yarn — traditionally zari — runs in one direction and silk or cotton in the other. That is where the inner glow comes from, and it is also why real tissue is crisp, holds a pleat like paper, and creases if you look at it sternly. There are three broad grades:

  • Silk tissue with zari. Silk in one direction, zari in the other. The most luminous and the most expensive; the zari may be real, tested or imitation, and the price follows. Our guide to telling real zari from imitation explains the difference.
  • Cotton or Kota-style tissue. Lighter, more matte, more forgiving, and the traditional choice in Kerala kasavu and some Banarasi and Chanderi work.
  • Polyester "tissue" with lurex. The bulk of what is sold online under ₹5,000. It is shiny rather than luminous, stiff in a plasticky way, and the shimmer sits on the surface instead of inside the cloth.

Our tissue fabric guide covers how it is woven, and the styling and care guide covers living with it.

Designer Labels

Sabyasachi

The label most associated with the heirloom tissue saree — antique-gold drapes with heritage borders, worn with heavy jewellery and a deliberately old-world air. Expensive and largely appointment-led, but it set the visual template the rest of the market follows.

Indicative price: ₹1,50,000 upwards
Best for: Heirloom intent, close-family weddings.

Raw Mango

Handloom-first, colour-led and restrained. Tissue and metallic weaves appear in strong, unexpected shades rather than the usual gold, with almost no surface embellishment — the cloth is the point.

Indicative price: ₹30,000–1,50,000
Best for: Minimalists, handloom purists.

Ekaya Banaras

A Banaras house with a modern eye. Tissue here is woven in Varanasi, often with Banarasi motifs carried in the metallic yarn, and the fabric claims are dependable because weaving is what the house does.

Indicative price: ₹40,000–2,00,000
Best for: Woven tissue with Banarasi character.

Anita Dongre and Manish Malhotra

Two different answers to the same fabric: Anita Dongre pairs light metallic bases with gota and soft florals for daytime; Manish Malhotra takes tissue toward evening glamour with sequins and sheen. Both sell through stores, which matters — tissue should be seen in person before it is bought.

Indicative price: ₹50,000–3,00,000
Best for: Seeing the fabric in hand first.

Heritage Weavers and the High Street

Kanchipuram and Kerala saree houses

The South has woven tissue for generations — Kanjeevaram tissue sarees with a full zari body, and Kerala kasavu in cream and gold. The large family saree houses of Chennai, Kanchipuram and Kochi carry them with honest fabric descriptions and a wide price ladder.

Indicative price: ₹6,000–1,50,000
Best for: Traditional woven tissue, trusted composition.

Pernia's Pop-Up Shop, Aza, Ogaan

The fastest way to compare tissue across dozens of labels. Filter by fabric, then read the composition line — "tissue", "tissue silk" and "tissue organza" are three different things.

Indicative price: ₹15,000–2,50,000
Best for: Comparing labels in one sitting.

Online high street

Thousands of "tissue" sarees between ₹1,000 and ₹5,000, almost all polyester with lurex. Fine for a single evening or a performance. The shine photographs loudly and the fabric does not breathe.

Indicative price: ₹1,000–6,000
Best for: Single-use, budget.

Hand-Embroidered Tissue: Where We Come In

We are a small made-to-order label in Jaipur. We do not weave tissue — we buy the woven cloth and hand-embroider it, over 4–5 weeks, which suits the fabric: tissue is a quiet, luminous ground that lets hand embroidery read clearly. One thing to know up front: our sarees are sold as the drape alone, so the blouse in the photograph is not included.

The tissue sarees

The Taraana saree (₹51,800) is soft antique-gold tissue, embroidered entirely in vibrant resham — floral and paisley-inspired vines along the borders and pallu, floral bootis across the body, and a single thin line of sequins at the border's edge so the threadwork stays the point. The Taraaz saree (₹41,500) is golden-champagne tissue with an all-over jaal of slender golden vines picked out in subtle blue, punctuated by floral bouquets in burnt orange, fuchsia and yellow, and finished with an ornate navy-blue border and tassels at the pallu. The Zohra saree (₹39,550) is soft tissue with borders hand-embroidered in mirror work, cutdana, sequins and zardozi.

Tissue beyond the saree

If you love the glow but not the drape, tissue works beautifully cut and stitched. The Bano & Dilruba lehenga (₹28,500) is soft pistachio silk tissue with a voluminous flare and a wide border of roses and vines. The Ananya & Tavishi sharara set (₹29,500) plays antique gold against muted green tissue. The Saavan & Nimrah set (₹20,375) is sage-toned tissue in an asymmetrical kurta with zardozi, sequin and cutdana florals at the neckline, hem, cuffs and back — the quietest way to wear the fabric.

And a tissue dupatta turns a plain silk suit into an occasion outfit. The Aafira dupatta (₹21,000) is soft tissue with marodi, sequin and thread embroidery in paisleys and floral jaals and a hand-embroidered zari border. The Zaira dupatta (₹25,000) is antique-gold tissue with a border of resham, zari, sequins and gota patti, and the Kohina dupatta (₹28,100) is a rich antique brown with sequins and cutdana in rhythmic linear placements. How to Judge a Tissue Saree Before You Pay

  • Look at where the shine comes from. Tilt it under a light. Woven tissue glows evenly from within and the colour shifts as it moves. Lurex polyester glitters on the surface and looks the same from every angle.
  • Feel the hand. Real tissue is crisp and papery, cool to the touch, and rustles. Polyester is slippery, springy and silent.
  • Expect creases. Tissue creases — it is the nature of a metallic yarn. A "tissue" that never creases is not tissue.
  • Ask for the composition in writing. Silk tissue, cotton tissue and polyester tissue are all legitimately sold; the problem is only when one is priced as another.
  • Check the embroidery weight. Tissue is fine cloth. Heavy all-over work will pull it over time; borders, bootis and a worked pallu last far longer.
  • Ask about the blouse and fall. Most embroidered tissue sarees are sold without a stitched blouse. Budget for one — our saree blouse roundup covers the options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which brand is best for tissue sarees in India?

For heirloom couture, Sabyasachi; for handloom minimalism, Raw Mango; for tissue woven in Varanasi, Ekaya Banaras; for traditional woven tissue at every price, the Kanchipuram and Kerala saree houses. For hand-embroidered tissue made to order, smaller ateliers — ours included — usually offer more handwork for the money.

How much does a good tissue saree cost?

Under ₹6,000 it is almost always polyester with lurex. Cotton and blended tissue from traditional saree houses runs roughly ₹6,000–25,000. Silk tissue with hand embroidery typically sits between ₹35,000 and ₹1,00,000, and designer couture goes well beyond that.

How can I tell real tissue from fake?

Tilt it under a light: woven tissue glows from within and shifts colour as it moves, while lurex polyester glitters flatly on the surface. Real tissue is crisp, papery, cool to the touch and creases easily. Ask for the fibre composition in writing before you pay.

Is a tissue saree comfortable to wear?

It is very light, which makes it easy to wear for long functions, but it is crisp rather than fluid, so it holds volume and needs neat pleating. A well-fitted petticoat and a few extra pins make a real difference. It is an excellent choice for evening receptions and winter weddings.

How do you store a tissue saree?

Dry clean only. Roll it around a muslin-covered tube, or fold it loosely in muslin and refold along different lines every few months — metallic yarn can crack along a permanent crease. Keep it away from perfume, damp and plastic covers, which tarnish zari.
