Indian Destination Weddings Abroad: What to Wear in Thailand, Bali, Dubai & Italy

Indian weddings abroad have become a category of their own — four days in Phuket, a fort-style resort in Bali, a palazzo in Tuscany, a beach club in Dubai. The guest list flies in from three continents, everyone has a baggage allowance, and there is no possibility of sending someone back to the market for a dupatta. Which makes this the hardest wedding to pack for and the easiest to get badly wrong.

By Destination

Thailand — Phuket, Krabi, Hua Hin

The most-used destination for Indian weddings outside India, and the hottest and most humid on this list. Expect 30–34°C with humidity above 75% year-round, with heavy rain from roughly June to October.

What it means: nothing lined, nothing heavy, nothing that water-spots. Chiffon, georgette, cotton chanderi and tissue. Most functions are beachside or poolside, which means the beach wedding rules apply almost exactly — judge the hem barefoot, pin every drape, skip the heels.

Bali and Indonesia

Similar climate to Thailand with slightly more cloud cover, but with a crucial difference: many Bali venues are clifftop or in the hills around Ubud rather than on sand, which means wind and stairs rather than sand and salt. Clifftop ceremonies at Uluwatu are famously beautiful and famously breezy.

What it means: pin everything, and think twice about organza. Also note that Bali is a Hindu island with real temple etiquette — if the itinerary includes a temple visit, shoulders and knees covered, and a sarong is usually provided or required.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi

The most logistically convenient — short flights from India, no visa friction for most, world-class hotel ballrooms, and a large Indian community that means everything is available locally. Weather is the whole question: November to March is perfect, and May to September is genuinely punishing outdoors.

What it means: a winter Dubai wedding is the one destination on this list where you can wear the heavy piece comfortably, because functions are in air-conditioned ballrooms. Italy — Tuscany, Lake Como, Amalfi

The prestige destination, and climatically the opposite of the others. Summer is dry heat rather than humidity, which is far kinder to silk. Evenings, even in July, cool noticeably — and a lakeside or hilltop venue can be genuinely cold after dark.

What it means: this is the destination where heavier silks and brocades actually work, and where a layer matters. Also the one where the venue is likely to be a historic property with strict rules about heels on old floors, confetti, and where you may and may not stand.

Turkey, Greece, Sri Lanka and Vietnam

The growing alternatives. Turkey and Greece behave like Italy — dry summer heat, cool evenings, historic venues. Sri Lanka and Vietnam behave like Thailand — humid, coastal, monsoon-dependent. Check the monsoon calendar for the specific coast rather than the country.

The Fabric Decision, Simplified

• Humid and coastal (Thailand, Bali, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, summer Dubai): chiffon, georgette, cotton chanderi, modal satin, tissue. No lining, embroidery at the borders rather than all over.
• Dry heat with cool evenings (Italy, Greece, Turkey, winter Dubai): silk, brocade, tissue, heavier chanderi. Plan a layer for after dark.
• Universally risky: raw and dupion silk, which water-spot permanently; velvet anywhere warm; anything with a canvas fall in humidity.
• Universally useful: tissue. It is light, it packs small, it catches evening light better than anything else, and it behaves in both climates.

The Taraaz saree in lustrous golden-champagne tissue — an all-over jaal of slender golden vines with subtle blue accents, punctuated by larger florals — is the single most useful thing to pack for a wedding abroad. It weighs almost nothing, it reads as formal anywhere from a Tuscan terrace to a Phuket beach club, and tissue creases far less alarmingly than it looks like it should.

The Ananya kurta with Tavishi sharara in luminous tissue, working antique gold against a muted green, is the no-draping equivalent — which matters when you are getting ready in a resort room with no help. The Zohra saree in soft tissue with mirror, cutdana, sequin and zardozi borders is the lighter-still option for a beachside ceremony.

For a European venue where the evening turns cold and the setting is formal, the Rafia anarkali in black silk with floral sprays in soft pink and peach resham covers properly and reads correctly in a palazzo. The Raat Rani blazer with Kiyara pants in black Varanasi silk brocade is the option for a welcome dinner where the dress code has drifted Western.

The Logistics Nobody Mentions

• Baggage allowance is the real constraint. A lehenga with a canvas fall can weigh three to four kilos on its own. Four functions plus shoes plus a return trip is how people end up paying excess baggage at both ends. Weigh the outfits before you pack the rest.
• Hand-carry the ceremony outfit. Not for creasing — for loss. A made-to-order piece cannot be replaced in the two days before a wedding in Phuket.
• Customs is usually fine, occasionally not. Personal clothing in reasonable quantity is not a problem anywhere on this list. Carrying eight new, tagged, high-value outfits into some countries can raise questions about commercial import. Remove tags, pack them worn-looking rather than retail-fresh, and keep them spread across bags.
• There is no tailor and no market. This is the difference from a wedding in India. Whatever you bring must already fit — which is the strongest practical argument for ordering made-to-measure well in advance rather than buying ready-made and planning to alter.
• Bring a repair kit. Matching thread, needle, safety pins, double-sided tape, spare sequins. You will be the most popular person in the group by day two.
• Steam, do not iron. Resort irons and hand embroidery are a bad pairing. Hang the piece in a hot shower instead. Our steaming guide covers it.
• Check whether outfits are being provided. Increasingly, hosts of large destination weddings coordinate or gift outfits for one function. Ask before you buy four.

The Timeline

Everything we make is hand-embroidered in Jaipur and cut to your measurements over four to five weeks, then three to seven days to ship, plus a buffer for customs into your country. For a destination wedding the working rule is four months, not three — because you are also fitting in a trial, any adjustments, and the fact that you may be shipping to one country and flying from another.
