Rishikesh & Haridwar Wedding Outfit Ideas: What to Wear to a Ganga-Side Wedding
A wedding on the Ganga at Rishikesh or Haridwar is not a beach wedding and not a palace wedding. It is quieter than both. Couples choose it for the river, the evening aarti, and a ceremony that feels closer to its meaning than a banquet hall allows. What that asks of a guest is simple to say and easy to get wrong: dress with restraint, and dress for your feet. You will spend more time on stone steps, barefoot at a ghat or walking a riverside path than at almost any other wedding you attend.
This guide covers what makes a Ganga-side wedding different, what the weather does across the year, what to wear to each function, and what to pack.
Why These Weddings Feel Different
Rishikesh and Haridwar are pilgrimage towns, and the law treats them that way. The sale of alcohol and meat is prohibited within the town limits, and most venues inside town are strictly vegetarian and dry. Properties further out along the river, such as around Shivpuri, operate under different arrangements — some serve alcohol under a licence for the day — so rules vary from venue to venue. If it matters to you, ask the hosts.
The result is a different mood. Evenings tend to be built around a Ganga aarti, a bhajan sandhya or a bonfire rather than a bar, and functions often end earlier. The dress code follows: fewer cocktail silhouettes, fewer plunging necklines, and more of the soft, luminous festive wear that looks right beside a river at dusk.
The Weather, Season by Season
- October–November and February–March: the most comfortable wedding months. Warm days, cool evenings. Light silk and Chanderi, with a layer for after dark.
- December–January: days are mild, often around the high teens, but nights drop to roughly 5–7°C and mornings by the river are frequently foggy. Plan a real layer — a jacket or a heavy shawl — as part of the outfit, not as an afterthought.
- April–June: hot. Cotton and Chanderi, pale colours, and ceremonies timed for morning or evening.
- July–September: monsoon. Heavy rain, a swollen river and slippery steps. Few couples pick these months; if yours has, see our monsoon wedding fabric guide.
Rishikesh sits where the Ganga leaves the mountains, so it is cooler than the plains but much warmer than a true hill station. If the wedding is further up in the hills, our hill-station wedding guide is the better reference.
The Ganga Aarti Evening
Many Rishikesh and Haridwar weddings include an evening at the aarti — at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan in Rishikesh, or Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar — or a private aarti arranged at the venue's own ghat. It happens around sunset, the crowds at the public ghats can be large, and you will usually remove your shoes.
Dress as you would for a temple: covered shoulders, a modest neckline, and a dupatta you can draw over your head. Avoid long trailing hems — ghat steps are often wet — and anything you would hate to see marked by water or diya oil. The Naina & Ahalya set (₹12,500) is an ivory cotton kurta and pant with delicate hand-embroidered florals at the neckline, cuffs and pant hem — easy, respectful and hem-safe. Pair it with the Zarveen dupatta (₹9,500), sheer sage-green Chanderi with a delicate zari border, light enough to wear over the head through the whole aarti.

Haldi by the River
A riverside haldi is one of the loveliest things about a Ganga wedding — morning light, open air, and turmeric that can be rinsed off in the river if the family's customs allow. Wear yellow, keep it light, and wear something you can sit on the ground in. The Afreen & Maahi set (₹15,875) is sunshine-yellow Chanderi with hand-embroidered cutdana and bead flowers, soft gathers at the bust and beaded neck and sleeve hems. It is the right weight for a warm morning. For more ideas, see our haldi outfit guide.
Mehendi and Sangeet at a Riverside Camp or Resort
Many Ganga-side weddings take over a riverside resort or a camp on the sand. That means grass, gravel or sand underfoot, and an evening that moves outdoors. Skip the heaviest lehenga; a silhouette that moves is more useful. The Faasle & Mogra ensemble (₹27,500) pairs an ivory silk Chanderi sleeveless peplum top, hand-embroidered with golden florals, with dhoti-inspired silk cotton zari pants that have an embroidered hem and sequinned pockets — festive, clear of the ground, and easy to dance in. On a winter evening, wear a shawl or jacket over it.

The Wedding Ceremony
This is where the restraint pays off. A Ganga-side mandap, often open to the river, is best matched with luminous rather than loud dressing: ivory with gold, soft champagne, pastels, warm beige. The river and the flowers bring the colour.
The Bano & Siya saree (₹32,500) is an ivory moonga zari silk saree with fine sequin work in floral motifs, delicate gold embroidery and a rich border, paired with a blouse of golden polka dots. It is exactly the kind of quiet, heirloom-feeling piece a riverside ceremony suits. If you prefer a kurta set, the Darya & Keya set (₹20,175) is fine silk in a champagne-taupe hue, embroidered at the neckline and sleeve hems with magenta-pink florals among golden vines. The Vanya & Bani set (₹23,425) is warm beige silk with guldasta appliqué at the neckline in dusty rose and peach resham, finished with nakshi and zardosi.

Is ivory acceptable at a Hindu wedding? In most modern families, yes — especially with gold. If the family is traditional, add a coloured dupatta. And whatever you wear, leave red to the bride.
Cold Evenings: Build the Layer Into the Look
For December and January weddings, the evening function is where most guests end up hiding a beautiful outfit under a hotel blanket. Plan for it. A structured jacket over a kurta or saree looks deliberate; a puffer does not. The Raat Rani set (₹16,500) is a fitted blazer in black Varanasi silk brocade with an all-over gold jaal and a hand-embroidered collar, with wide-leg brocade pants and a dupion silk bustier — the blazer also works alone over a plain kurta. Some families avoid black at the pheras, so it is a better choice for a welcome dinner or bonfire night. Our guide to layering Indian outfits with capes and jackets has more ideas.
Footwear: The Part Everyone Gets Wrong
- Expect to go barefoot. Shoes come off at the aarti, at temples and often at the mandap. Wear slip-ons you can take off and put on without bending over a buckle in a crowd.
- Stone steps get wet. Ghats are slippery, especially at dusk and in winter fog. Flat juttis or kolhapuris with some grip beat heels completely.
- Sand and gravel at camps. Block heels at most; stilettos sink.
- Hem length. Floor-grazing hems pick up water, sand and diya oil. Have lehengas and shararas hemmed to your flat shoe, not to a heel.
Our footwear guide for Indian outfits goes further.
How This Differs From a Temple Wedding
If the ceremony itself is inside a temple, the rules are stricter still — our temple wedding guide covers that. Most Rishikesh and Haridwar weddings are held at riverside resorts, ashrams or private ghats, so they sit in between: more relaxed than a temple, more modest than a city banquet.
What to Pack
- One modest outfit with sleeves and a head-covering dupatta, for aarti and temple visits.
- A light, washable outfit for the haldi.
- A festive but movable outfit for the sangeet.
- Your best piece for the ceremony — luminous, not loud.
- A real layer for winter evenings: jacket, shawl or velvet.
- Two pairs of flat, slip-on shoes, one of which can get wet.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear to a wedding in Rishikesh?
Soft, luminous festive wear — Chanderi or silk kurta sets, light sarees, pastels, ivory with gold — with covered shoulders and a dupatta for the aarti and temple visits. Add a proper jacket or shawl for winter evenings, and wear flat slip-on shoes for ghats and steps.
Is alcohol allowed at weddings in Rishikesh and Haridwar?
The sale of alcohol and meat is prohibited within the holy towns' limits, and most venues in town are vegetarian and dry. Some properties further out along the river serve alcohol under a licence for the day, so it depends on the venue — check with your hosts.
How cold does Rishikesh get for a winter wedding?
In December and January, days are mild but nights typically fall to around 5–7°C, and mornings by the river are often foggy. Plan a jacket, shawl or velvet layer as part of every evening outfit.
What should I wear to the Ganga aarti?
Dress as for a temple: covered shoulders, a modest neckline and a dupatta you can draw over your head. Avoid trailing hems, since ghat steps are often wet, and wear shoes you can slip off easily.
When is the best time for a Rishikesh wedding?
October–November and February–March are the most comfortable, with warm days and cool evenings. December–January is cold at night, April–June is hot, and the July–September monsoon brings heavy rain and slippery ghats.
