Where to Shop for Wedding & Festive Clothes in Delhi: A Complete Guide

Delhi does not have one shopping district for wedding clothes. It has about eight, they are spread across thirty kilometres, and each is good at exactly one thing and useless at the others. The people who shop well here are not the ones with the biggest budget — they are the ones who know that trims come from Kinari Bazaar, tailoring happens in Lajpat Nagar, and nobody sensible buys a lehenga in the same place they buy the dupatta to go over it.

Old Delhi: Chandni Chowk and Its Lanes

Chandni Chowk is not a market. It is a dozen specialist markets in adjoining lanes, and the whole thing rewards knowing which lane you want before you arrive. Note that most of it closes on Sundays.

Kinari Bazaar

The single best reason to come to Old Delhi. Lace, gota, zari borders, tassels, latkans, sequin trim, kundan buttons — the raw material of Indian embellishment, sold by the metre in a lane barely wide enough for two people. If you have an outfit that is almost right, this is where it becomes right. Bring a swatch and bring patience.

Katra Neel and the fabric lanes

Silks, cottons, brocades and dress material by the metre, at wholesale-adjacent prices. This is where Delhi's tailors buy. Come with a clear idea of yardage, because nobody here will hold your hand through the arithmetic.

Dariba Kalan

The silver and jewellery lane, going back centuries. Silver by weight, plus the workshops that will make a piece to order. For gold and polki, the trade sits closer to the main road.

Lajpat Nagar Central Market

The most useful market in Delhi for the ordinary wedding guest. Suits, dupattas, ready-made ethnic wear across every price point, and — critically — the tailoring ecosystem. This is where you go when something needs to be altered in three days, when you want a blouse copied from a photograph, or when you need six lehenga blouses stitched for a family before December.

Quality varies street by street. The rule is the same as everywhere: look at the reverse of the embroidery before you believe the front.

Karol Bagh

Bridal lehengas, heavy occasion wear, and the whole apparatus of a big North Indian wedding. Ajmal Khan Road and the surrounding lanes are wall-to-wall showrooms, and the range runs from ₹15,000 to genuinely eye-watering. Expect to be walked through forty pieces whether you want to be or not; expect the sales technique to be relentless. Go on a weekday morning if you value your composure.

Shahpur Jat, Hauz Khas and Mehrauli

Delhi's designer village belt, and the most interesting shopping in the city if you want something that is not in every wedding photograph.

• Shahpur Jat — the largest concentration of independent designer studios in the city, in converted village houses. Younger labels, custom work, and prices well below the mall flagships. Many studios are appointment-only, so message ahead.
• Hauz Khas Village — a smaller, more retail-oriented version of the same idea, with boutiques mixed among the restaurants.
• Mehrauli — the high end of the village-studio model, with couture ateliers around the Qutub area. Appointment-only, and priced accordingly.

The Retail and Luxury End

• South Extension and Greater Kailash — established saree houses and mid-to-premium ethnic retail. The most efficient way to see a lot of silk in an afternoon.
• DLF Emporio, Vasant Kunj — the designer flagships under one roof. Useful for seeing the couture register in person before deciding whether you want it.
• Khan Market — small boutiques, contemporary labels, and the best place to buy something wearable rather than ceremonial.
• Dilli Haat, INA, and the state emporia on Baba Kharak Singh Marg — handloom from every state at fixed prices, no bargaining, no pressure. Underrated for sarees and for cotton dupattas.

What Delhi Is Genuinely Best At

Two things, above everything else. Trims and embellishment, because of Kinari Bazaar — there is nowhere else in India where you can buy gota by the metre in forty widths in one lane. And fast, competent tailoring at scale, because Lajpat Nagar and the neighbourhood tailors around it exist to turn wedding season around in days.

What Delhi is not best at is the thing most people come here for: heavily hand-embroidered occasion wear. A great deal of what sells in Karol Bagh and Chandni Chowk as hand work is machine embroidery — and much of the genuine hand embroidery sold in Delhi showrooms is made elsewhere, frequently in Jaipur or Kolkata, and marked up on the way. How to Shop Delhi Without Losing a Week

• Cluster your day geographically. Old Delhi in one trip, the south Delhi belt in another. Crossing the city twice in a day is how a shopping trip becomes a traffic story.
• Weekday mornings, always. Chandni Chowk on a Saturday is an endurance event, and most of it is shut on Sunday.
• Carry cash for the bazaars, cards for everywhere else. And take a bill for anything significant.
• Bargain in Old Delhi and Karol Bagh; do not bargain in a designer studio. In the second case the price reflects karigar hours, and haggling reads as an insult.
• Do not buy anything that needs fitting on your last day. Alterations on embroidered fabric take time to do properly, and rushed ones ruin good pieces.
