For a Dogra wedding in Jammu, wear what the Dogri women around you are wearing in spirit: a long kurta with fitted or straight pants, or an anarkali, finished with a dupatta you can pull over your head. Gota and warm festive colour are perfectly at home. Then plan for two things guests from outside Jammu often miss. The pheras traditionally take place deep into the night, on cold winter nights. And the wedding feast, the Taam, is traditionally eaten sitting in rows on the floor. Dress for both and you will be comfortable from the baraat to the vidaai.

The Dogras are the people of the Duggar region around Jammu, and Dogra families also live in neighbouring parts of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Their language is Dogri, and their weddings are carried along by women's songs from start to finish. This guide follows a traditional Hindu Dogra wedding as Dogri writers and researchers describe it. Customs differ between families and between village and city, and many urban weddings fold several rituals into a day or two. Treat this as a map rather than a rulebook, and ask your hosts which functions you are invited to.

First, an Honest Note on What We Make

We do not make the Dogri suthan, the traditional pleated trouser, and we would not pretend to. We do not make menswear, shawls or jewellery either. What we make are kurta sets, anarkalis, sharara sets, lehengas and dupattas, hand-embroidered by karigars in our Jaipur atelier. Many are finished in gota, the metallic ribbon work Jaipur is known for: a Rajasthani tradition, not a Dogri one, but it sits naturally beside the gota-trimmed suits you will see in Jammu.

The Dogri Suit: What You Will See

The traditional dress of Dogra women is a long kurta, the suthan and a dupatta. The suthan is wide at the top, roomy through the leg and gathered into many pleats at the ankle. The women's kurta is usually long and straight-cut. For weddings, both are dressed up: Jammu heritage writers describe suthans and kurtas trimmed with gota kinari, patti and tilla, the finest with dabka and nakshi zardozi, and note that many Dogri brides choose a heavy suthan suit for the wedding itself. The dupatta is never optional. Dogra women have traditionally covered their heads with a long chunni, and at a wedding you will see that everywhere.

For a guest, that sets the tone: a long kurta and pant, gota for festivity, and a dupatta that does real work. Our guide to gota patti explains the craft.

The Inara & Nazm set (₹25,500) is the closest in feeling. It is a silk kurta set with gota-patti motifs on the front placket and cuffs, outlined in resham and sequins and continuing across the sleeves and hem. The matching Nazm pant is finished with a gota border.

If you prefer the fitted ankle of a churidaar, which is the nearest our range comes to the suthan's gathered line, look at these. The Heeriye & Reva set (₹19,500) is a cinnamon-brown Chanderi anarkali with a tonal churidaar, florals in resham, cutdana and sequins on the yoke, and a contrast border in scarlet and ivory. The Banni & Aayat set (₹19,350) is a full-length Chanderi kurta with hand-covered buttons down the front, floral and paisley embroidery on the yoke, cuffs and hem, and churidar-style pants. For a straight pant, the Faiza & Rida set (₹19,500) is soft gold silk with three-quarter sleeves, embroidered in gota and thread work in rose and coral, with a broad embroidered border on the pant.

Before the Wedding: Evenings of Song

Once the date is fixed, the singing begins. In a traditional Dogra home, women of the neighbourhood and the family gather in the evenings to sing, and the family sends round an oral invitation for these sessions, the geetain da sadda. The songs follow the wedding stage by stage. At the bride's home they are suhaag, songs of a daughter about to leave her parents. At the groom's home they are ghoriyan, songs in praise of the groom. If you are invited to one, it is a home gathering: wear a comfortable kurta set you can sit on the floor in. Many families now also hold a mehndi or ladies' sangeet, as across north India; dress bright, light and easy to dance in.

Butna and Saant: For Close Family

The day before the wedding, the bride and groom are each anointed at home with butna, a paste described as barley flour, turmeric, herbs and mustard oil, while the women sing songs made for the occasion. Their maternal uncle then performs a ritual called barre bharna and lifts them into the house. Around the same time comes the saant, a family puja at both homes. A wooden toran of eleven parrots is put up and worshipped, and the parrots are fed babru made from flour and jaggery.

These are close-family rituals. If you are part of them, wear something you will not mind marking with turmeric and oil, and save your best gota for later.

The Baraat and the Milni

The baraat, the janjh in Dogri, leaves in the evening. The sehra is tied on the groom's head (by his sisters or his maternal uncle, depending on the family), and he rides out on a mare, often with a sword at his side. At the bride's gate comes the milni: the senior men of both families, fathers and maternal uncles among them, embrace their counterparts one by one and exchange garlands and gifts, while the bride's side sings sithniyan, cheeky teasing songs aimed at the groom's party. Expect laughter, and expect to stand outdoors in the evening chill.

This is the moment to wear your richest kurta set. The Jazabah & Saiyan set (₹27,500) is deep red Chanderi with tonal embroidery in gota patti, marodi, resham and bead work along the neckline, hem and sleeves. The floral bel border carries paisley-inspired motifs down to the pant hem. For something less expected, the Nazma & Ahana set (₹45,100) pairs a soft blue silk kurta with a warm honey-gold silk pant. Its neckline, sleeve and hem borders are hand-embroidered in gota patti and sequins. Our milni and baraat welcome guide covers this moment across north Indian weddings.

Meanwhile, the women who stay behind at the groom's house traditionally keep an all-night vigil, the jagrana, with songs, dancing and comic skits. If you are with the groom's family, you may be at that party instead.

The Ved: Pheras That Run Towards Dawn

The wedding itself takes place at the vedee, a pyramid-like wooden mandap on four pillars, topped with carved wooden parrots that are treated as divine witnesses. Part of the ceremony, including the kanyadaan, can take place indoors, and part of it in the courtyard. The bride's maternal uncle carries her to the vedee while the women sing, and the panigrahan, the circling of the sacred fire and the saptapadi follow.

The practical point: traditionally the ved is performed late at night and can run until dawn, with the pheras often in the early hours. City weddings are often earlier, so ask. If you stay for the pheras, plan to sit in an open courtyard or tent at the coldest hour of a Jammu winter night.

That is where a jacket earns its place. The Laalsa & Ravaya set (₹73,450) is a front-open jacket and sharara in vermilion silk. The jacket is covered in floral and botanical jaal in marodi, zari, resham, sequins, cutdana, beads and aari, with finely cut gota shapes appliquéd into petals and leaves, and the sharara has linear gota accents. It is a piece for the bride's sister or a close cousin.

The Taam: Dressing for a Meal on the Floor

The Dogra community feast is the Taam, also called the dham. Traditionally, guests sit together on mats in rows, and food is served on leaf plates and bowls, the doona pattal. It comes in a fixed order, rice first, then rajma, dal, vegetables and the sweet-and-sour pumpkin ambal, with something sweet to finish. It is cooked by a specialist cook, the sain. Many wedding venues now serve at tables, but if the family keeps the old way, you will be sitting cross-legged for a while.

So choose a silhouette that sits well on the floor. A sharara or a flared anarkali is far easier than a narrow skirt, and keep sleeves clear of the leaf plate. The Ruhma & Rabaab set (₹32,500) is a coral-pink silk kurta embroidered in marodi, resham and sequins, with paisley and floral vines along the neckline, cuffs and hem, over a flared, fluid sharara. Our sharara collection has more.

The Dupatta Does the Work

Your dupatta goes over your head at the vedee and round your shoulders the rest of the night. A pin at the back keeps it in place; our guide to draping a dupatta over your head shows how.

  • The Kainaat dupatta (₹9,750) is sheer organza with circular medallions of gota patti, sequins, resham and beadwork along its length, and a gota-finished border.
  • The Shayra dupatta (₹14,500) is lush green organza silk, its borders embroidered with gota, marodi, sequins and thread work in old rose and gold.
  • The Aftaab dupatta (₹9,500) is rich maroon organza silk, with gota and thread work along the border and scattered butas across the body.

The Jammu Winter: Milder Than Kashmir, Still Cold at Night

Jammu sits in the plains and low hills, so its winter days are gentle, with average highs of around 17–20°C in December and January. Nights fall to roughly 4–7°C on average, and the hours before dawn are the coldest. That is far milder than a Kashmiri wedding or the hill weddings in our Himachali wedding guide, but do not dress for a warm evening.

  • Choose silk and Chanderi over sheer georgette for the night functions.
  • Ask for full sleeves. We cut every adult piece to your measurements at no extra charge.
  • Carry a shawl. We do not make them, but a plain wool shawl in a neutral tone sits well over almost anything.
  • Wear a fine thermal underneath. A straight kurta and pant hides one completely.

Our winter wedding guide has more.

The Reception and Colour

Many families now add a reception, and this is where a lehenga makes sense. The Raanisa & Mahira set (₹35,500) is a vibrant sindoori-orange lehenga in woven booti silk, finished at the hem with gota, marodi, bead and thread work, with a matching blouse embroidered at the neckline, sleeves and waist.

On colour, warm festive shades are safe: reds, oranges, pinks, golds and greens. Many Hindu families would rather guests avoided all-black and all-white at the ceremony. If you know Punjabi weddings better, our Punjabi wedding guide is a useful comparison: the milni, sehra and ghodi are shared, but the songs, the vedee and the Taam are Jammu's own.

If you have a spare hour in Jammu, visit Mubarak Mandi, the old palace complex of the Dogra rulers in the walled city, begun in the early eighteenth century and the royal residence until 1925. Part of it now houses the Dogra Art Museum.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a woman wear to a Dogra wedding as a guest?

A long kurta with a fitted or straight pant, an anarkali or a sharara set in a warm festive colour, with a dupatta you can wear over your head. Gota work suits the occasion. Bring a shawl or jacket for the evening.

What is the traditional dress of Dogra women?

A long kurta, the suthan and a dupatta. The suthan is a trouser that is wide at the top and gathered into many pleats at the ankle. For weddings, suits are trimmed with gota and other metallic work, and many Dogri brides choose a heavy suthan suit for the wedding ceremony.

Why do Dogra weddings go on so late?

In traditional Hindu Dogra weddings, the baraat arrives in the evening and the ved, the wedding ceremony at the vedee, is performed late at night, often continuing towards dawn. Many city weddings now start earlier, so ask your hosts, and dress warmly if you plan to stay for the pheras.

What is the Dogra Taam?

The Taam, also called the dham, is the traditional Dogra community feast served at weddings and other occasions. Guests sit in rows on mats and eat from leaf plates, and dishes come in a set order, with rajma, dal and the sweet-and-sour pumpkin ambal among them. A sharara or a flared anarkali is the easiest thing to sit in.

How cold is a winter wedding in Jammu?

December and January days average around 17–20°C, but nights fall to roughly 4–7°C. That is much milder than Kashmir, but cold enough for full sleeves, a shawl and a fine thermal at a late-night outdoor ceremony.
