Gurpurab — Guru Nanak Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru — falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, the full moon of Kartik. For children, the day usually means the gurdwara: kirtan, karah prashad and langar, and perhaps an early-morning prabhat pheri or a nagar kirtan through the streets beforehand. The short answer: a modest kurta and pant with sleeves, a head covering that stays on, shoes that slip off easily, and a warm layer for the morning. Here's how to get each right.

Gurdwara Etiquette, and What It Means for Clothes

The gurdwara's rules are simple and apply to everyone, of every faith, adult or child. What they mean for a child's outfit is more practical than people expect:

  • Cover the head. Everyone covers their head inside the gurdwara — with a patka, a rumal (a square cloth, usually provided at the entrance), a dupatta or a scarf. A cap doesn't count. For children, the trick is a covering that stays put while they wriggle; more on that below.
  • Shoes off. Shoes go on racks or in the shoe room at the entrance, and some larger gurdwaras have a shallow channel of water to walk through at the entrance. Slip-on juttis or sandals save a lot of kneeling and buckling in a queue.
  • Sit on the floor. In the darbar hall the sangat sits on the floor, with feet not pointed towards the Guru Granth Sahib. A child will sit cross-legged for a long time, so a skirt that splits open or a kurta that rides up is a problem; a pant is easier.
  • Dress modestly. Visitor guides ask that shoulders and knees be covered and that clothing not be tight or sheer. For children that simply means sleeves and full-length pants or skirts.
  • Karah prashad and langar. Karah prashad is received sitting, in both hands cupped together — sticky, warm and buttery, so plan for hands being wiped on clothes. Langar is eaten sitting on the floor in rows (pangat), after washing hands. Everyone is welcome at langar, whatever their faith.

If your child breaks a rule, don't panic: sevadars will usually speak quietly to the parent, not the child. For the grown-ups' side of the day, see our Gurpurab outfit ideas for adults, and for general visits, our guide to what kids should wear to a temple or puja.

Covering a Child's Head: What Actually Stays On

  • Patka. For Sikh boys with uncut hair, the patka is the familiar everyday covering, tied over the joora (topknot). For any child, a patka or a bandana-style rumal tied at the back stays on better than a loose cloth.
  • A light dupatta. For girls, a soft cotton or mulmul dupatta draped and lightly pinned to the hair at each side is the classic answer. Heavy embroidered dupattas slide off a small head within minutes.
  • The rumal at the door. Almost every gurdwara keeps a basket of them. Fine in a pinch; just bring a hair clip.
  • For babies, a soft cotton scarf lightly tied, never tight under the chin — and ask the sevadars if unsure. They are almost always kind about small children.

Most of our kids' pieces are two-piece kurta-and-pant or lehenga sets, so plan the head covering separately.

For the Gurdwara: Kurta and Pant Sets

Gurpurab calls for something festive but calm — the day is devotional, not a party. There's no prescribed colour; soft, light tones and gentle embroidery feel right, and a long kurta over a pant gives you the modesty and ease of sitting that the floor demands.

Our first choice is the Vanya & Bani set (₹16,500): a warm beige silk kurta with a scoop neck and three-quarter sleeves, with appliqué guldasta (bouquet) motifs at the neckline in dusty rose and peach resham, nakshi and zardozi, scattered butis, and a straight beige pant. It is described as "understated ceremonial", which is exactly the register for the darbar hall. The Faiza & Rida set (₹14,500) is similar in spirit — soft gold silk, a gentle V-neck and three-quarter sleeves, with gota and thread work in rose and coral trailing along the neckline, sleeves and hem, and a pant with a broad embroidered border.

For a wide-leg silhouette, which is the most comfortable for sitting cross-legged, look at the Anika & Mahboob set (₹14,500): an ivory silk peplum top with long sleeves and a round neck, hand-embroidered with Mughal-inspired vines in gold and silver thread, and wide-legged trousers that mirror it. (It has a cut-out detail at the back, so add a cardigan or shawl if that concerns you.) The Nazakat & Saanwli set (₹17,500) pairs a Chanderi kurta, scattered with floral bootis and finished with paisleys on the sleeves in zardozi, cutdana, sequins and beads, with the wide-legged Saanwli pant.

Soft colour for a younger child

The Darya & Keya set (₹14,500) is a champagne-taupe silk kurta with a V-neck and a long, straight line, with magenta-pink florals and golden vines at the neckline and sleeve hems in zari, sequins, cutdana and micro-beads. The Sahira & Fizza set (₹16,500) pairs a soft pistachio-green silk kurta with a lime-yellow silk pant, embroidered with floral and paisley motifs in resham, sequins, cutdana, beads and aari along the neckline and hems. The Ruhani & Nilofer set (₹14,500) is soft pink silk, zardozi, sequins and cutdana at the neckline, bootis across the body and a straight matching pant — made, in our own words, for intimate celebrations.

Deeper tones, and an honest note on boys

Our kidswear reads girls-leaning and festive, and we don't make a dedicated boyswear range. Two of our sets are tonal and restrained enough that some families choose them more broadly: the Tara & Pari set (₹18,500), a deep navy satin kurta with short sleeves, a contrast magenta yoke and resham, sequin and bead florals, with a straight navy pant; and the Ayesha & Mehr set (₹18,500), a deep black kurta and pant with jaali-inspired marodi, sequin and thread borders and a medallion framed in plum at the back. Deep colours are also more forgiving at langar. Message us before ordering if you'd like to talk it through.

We'd gently steer you away from our sleeveless kids' pieces for the gurdwara, or at least have a jacket over them — they're better kept for evening parties. And a lehenga is lovely but harder to sit cross-legged in for an hour; if she wants one, pick one with a soft, full flare and practise sitting at home.

Prabhat Pheri and Nagar Kirtan: Dress for Cold and Distance

In the days before Gurpurab, many gurdwaras hold prabhat pheris — pre-dawn processions that leave the gurdwara and walk through the neighbourhood singing shabads. The celebrations proper also start early: gurdwaras typically begin at amrit vela, around 4 to 5 in the morning, and many sing Gurbani again late at night around 1:20 a.m., the traditional hour of Guru Nanak's birth. Usually the day before, a nagar kirtan procession, led by the Panj Pyare with the Nishan Sahib and the Guru Granth Sahib carried in a palki, winds through the streets, often with gatka teams displaying Sikh martial arts. Children love the gatka.

Late November mornings in north India are cold before sunrise, and a procession means walking for an hour or more. So:

  • Layer over the kurta. A cardigan, a Nehru-style jacket or a warm shawl over the set, and thermal leggings under the pant for small children. Our guide to layering kids' ethnic wear for winter covers what works over embroidery without crushing it.
  • Proper walking shoes for the procession, with socks — and something to swap into, or just go barefoot, at the gurdwara.
  • A warm head covering. A wool-blend patka or a soft shawl over the head does double duty in the cold.
  • Keep the good set for the gurdwara. Street processions mean dust and flowers underfoot; many families walk the pheri in simpler clothes and change before the darbar hall.

For a Baby's First Gurpurab

Our kidswear starts at 0–3 months, and a baby's first Gurpurab is a lovely reason for a first proper outfit. Choose soft linings and no heavy embroidery at the neck, and ask us about the closure if quick changes matter. The Ghazal & Parchhai set (₹12,500) is one of the gentlest pieces we make — a silk kurta with sequin and bead floral vines in rouge, gold and ivory at the neckline and cuffs, and a soft ivory silk pant. See our guide to dressing an infant for a first festival.

Ordering in Time for 24 November

  • Allow about six weeks. Each piece is made to order by hand in our Jaipur atelier in 4–5 weeks, plus 3–7 days of shipping. For 24 November, order by the first half of October to be comfortable.
  • Measure close to ordering. Sizes run from 0–3 months to 15–16 years, but the chart shows standard ages — send your child's measurements and we'll make it to fit. A fully custom size is ₹2,000 extra.
  • Do a trial at home. Sit on the floor in it for half an hour, try the head covering, eat something sticky. You'll find the itchy seam now.
  • Afterwards, wipe away ghee from the karah prashad quickly, air the set, and see our care guide for kids' embroidered clothes.

Gurpurab shares its date with Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali this year; if the family is heading to the ghats as well, our Kartik Purnima guide covers that. And if there's a Sikh wedding in the family this season, see what to wear to an Anand Karaj — the same gurdwara rules apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should kids wear to the gurdwara on Gurpurab?

A modest kurta and pant or long kurta with sleeves, which lets them sit cross-legged on the floor comfortably, a head covering such as a patka, rumal or light dupatta that stays on, and slip-on shoes that are easy to take off at the entrance. Add a warm layer for early mornings.

Do children have to cover their heads in a gurdwara?

Yes, everyone covers their head inside a gurdwara. A patka, a rumal (usually available at the entrance), a light dupatta or a scarf all work; a cap does not. For small children, a covering tied at the back or pinned to the hair stays on best.

When is Gurpurab in 2026?

Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, the full moon of Kartik. Many gurdwaras hold an Akhand Path in the two days before, and a nagar kirtan procession usually the day before.

Is a lehenga suitable for a child at the gurdwara?

It can be, but a kurta and pant is usually easier, since children sit cross-legged on the floor for kirtan and langar. If she wears a lehenga, choose one with a soft, full flare and sleeves on the blouse or a jacket over it.

When should I order a kids' outfit for Gurpurab?

Our kidswear is made to order in 4–5 weeks plus 3–7 days of shipping, so for 24 November order by the first half of October. A fully custom size is available for ₹2,000 extra.
