Dussehra falls on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, the day after Navratri ends. For children it is really three different occasions: a festive morning at home or at school, one or more long evenings at the Ramlila, and the Ravan dahan itself — a giant effigy set alight on an open ground, surrounded by crowds and fireworks. The short answer: dress them up for the puja and the Ramlila, and dress them down, in cotton and closed shoes, for the burning. This guide takes each in turn.

A Quick Word on What Dussehra Looks Like for a Child

Across north India, Ramlila — literally "Rama's play" — is staged through the Navratri nights by local committees, mostly drawing on Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, with amateur casts from the neighbourhood. Most run for about ten days and climax on Vijayadashami, when effigies of Ravan, his brother Kumbhakaran and his son Meghnad are burned, typically with fireworks packed inside. UNESCO inscribed Ramlila as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2008, and the most famous one, at Ramnagar near Varanasi, runs for a full month with young boys playing the lead roles.

Elsewhere the day looks different. In Kerala, Vijayadashami is the day of Vidyarambham, when children of two or three write their first letters in a plate of rice. In Maharashtra, families exchange apta leaves and call them "sona", gold. In Bengal, it is Bijoya Dashami and the end of Durga Puja — our guide to kids at Durga Puja covers that. What follows is mostly for the north Indian version: the Ramlila maidan and the effigy.

The Morning: Puja at Home, and Visiting Family

Many families mark the morning with a puja, a visit to elders and something sweet. This is the part of the day that ends up in the photographs, and it is where a proper festive set earns its place. Because the day follows straight on from Navratri, you may already have something from the garba nights; if not, go for warm, celebratory colour.

The Roshni & Nazreen set (₹21,500) pairs a mustard-yellow Chanderi kurta, covered in a trellis of vines in fine aari and golden thread with soft pink resham flowers, sequins and tiny moti, with a soft pink Chanderi sharara. A sharara is easy for sitting cross-legged through an aarti and easy for running to the door every time the bell rings. For something quieter, the Faiza & Rida set (₹14,500) is a soft gold silk kurta with a gentle V-neck and three-quarter sleeves, embroidered with gota and thread work in rose and coral tones, and a matching pant with a broad border.

The Ramlila Evenings

A Ramlila evening is long, often outdoors, and often late. Your child will sit on a durrie or a plastic chair for a couple of hours, eat something from a stall, fall half-asleep on your shoulder during the slower scenes and wake up for the battles. That shapes the outfit more than the occasion does:

  • Kurta and pant over a lehenga. Pants mean she can sit on the ground, climb onto a lap and walk back through a packed ground without a skirt underfoot.
  • Sleeves. October evenings in north India are pleasant, but outdoor grounds bring mosquitoes. Longer sleeves and full-length pants help; carry a light layer for the walk home.
  • Soft necklines. Embroidery that sits against the skin for three hours needs a lining underneath. Most of our kidswear is lined in mulmul or shantone; check which on each piece.
  • Nothing you would be heartbroken about. Ground dust, a dropped jalebi, a spilled cup of chai from the row behind. Save the most precious piece for Diwali.

The Shaista & Sufi set (₹15,500) is almost made for this: a rich burnt-orange kurta and pant detailed with marodi, sequins and bead embroidery at the neckline, sleeves and hem, described in our own notes as made "for long evenings and intimate gatherings". The Anahita & Amira set (₹14,500) is a magenta silk kurta embroidered with sequins and beads at the neckline, cuffs and back collar, with a burnt-orange silk pant — colours drawn from gulal and marigold strings, which suit the season well.

For a lighter, more everyday option, the Ghazal & Parchhai set (₹12,500) is a silk kurta whose neckline and cuffs are framed in floral vines of rouge, gold and ivory in sequins and beads, inspired by old phool-butti borders, with a soft ivory silk pant. It is one of the simplest pieces in our kidswear, which is exactly what you want on night four of the Ramlila.

Ravan Dahan: Dress for Safety First

We make festive clothes, and we would still tell you plainly: the Ravan dahan is not the place for silk, tissue or a long dupatta. The effigies are packed with fireworks, the crowd can surge when they go up, and there is smoke, sparks and falling debris. The standard fireworks-safety advice — including India's explosives safety regulator, PESO — is to wear thick cotton rather than synthetics, and not to wear loosely hanging clothes. For a child at the ground, that means:

  • A plain cotton kurta and pyjama or leggings. Nothing loose, frilly or trailing. Our kidswear is silk, Chanderi, tissue and satin, so this is the one part of Dussehra we'd tell you to dress them for from somewhere else.
  • No dupatta. Leave it at home, or fold it into a bag before you reach the ground. A loose, trailing end is the obvious risk near fire and sparks.
  • Closed shoes. Grounds after the burning are full of spent firecracker casings and hot ash, and you'll be walking out through a crowd in the dark. Save the juttis for the morning.
  • Something bright or distinctive so you can spot them, and your phone number on a card in their pocket.
  • Ear protection for toddlers and babies — the bangs from inside the effigy are loud, and small children often find them frightening.
  • Stay well back. The best view for a child is usually from a parent's shoulders at the edge of the crowd, not the front rope.

If you want both — the festive picture and the fire — change in between. Many families do the puja and visits in a good set, then swap into cotton before heading to the maidan.

The School Dussehra Celebration

Schools often mark Dussehra the week before, with a small Ramlila, a story session or a dress-up day where children come as Ram, Sita, Lakshman or Hanuman. Crowns, bows, maces and a Hanuman tail come from a costume shop — we don't make costumes or jewellery — but a real outfit makes a far better base than a shiny polyester costume, and it gets worn again afterwards.

For a Sita look

A lehenga with a dupatta draped over the head reads immediately as Sita on a school stage. The Mehergul & Abroo lehenga (₹19,500) is rani-pink silk with fluid gathers and a blouse hand-embroidered in sequins, cutdana and thread work. The dupatta in our photographs isn't included, so add a light one of your own for the head drape. Our guide to school functions has more on stage-friendly fits.

For a more understated look

Our kidswear reads girls-leaning and festive, and we don't make a dedicated boyswear range. Two sets are tonal and restrained enough that some families choose them more broadly: the Tara & Pari set (₹18,500), a deep navy satin kurta with a contrast magenta yoke and resham, sequin and bead florals, with a straight navy pant; and the Ayesha & Mehr set (₹18,500), a deep black kurta and pant with jaali-inspired marodi, sequin and thread borders and a medallion framed in plum at the back. If you're unsure whether either suits your child, message us before ordering.

An Honest Note on Timing

Every piece of our kidswear is made to order by hand in our Jaipur atelier, which takes 4–5 weeks, plus 3–7 days of shipping. If you are reading this in late September or October, a piece ordered today will not arrive in time for 20 October. We'd rather say that now than disappoint you on the day.

What it can do is carry straight on into Diwali on Sunday, 8 November. An order placed in the next few days may just make it — WhatsApp us your date first and we'll tell you honestly whether it can — and anything later is for the wedding season and next year's Dussehra. Express is sometimes possible, depending on the piece and the month; ask us rather than assume. Because the festivals come in a run (Navratri, Dussehra, Karva Chauth, Dhanteras, Diwali, Bhai Dooj), it's worth planning them as one season. Our guide to how many festive outfits a child actually needs helps, and for Diwali itself see our kids' Diwali outfit ideas. If you're after something colourful for Diwali night, the Gia & Cyraa set (₹18,500) is a vibrant lime-green silk kurta and straight pant with rose-gold and fuchsia florals in marodi, gota, sequins and thread work — glorious against diya light.

Sizes, Fit and Care

  • Sizes run from 0–3 months to 15–16 years. The chart shows standard ages, not garment measurements — send your child's measurements and we'll make it to fit. A fully custom size is ₹2,000 extra. See our guide to buying for growing kids.
  • Air it after the Ramlila. Outdoor evenings leave smoke and dust in fabric. Hang it in the shade overnight before putting it away, and have embroidered pieces dry-cleaned rather than washed at home; see our care guide for kids' embroidered clothes.
  • Lining matters most for small children. Our kids' fabric guide explains mulmul versus shantone, and what's comfortable for hours.

For the rest of the family, our Dussehra outfit ideas for 2026 covers what the grown-ups can wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should kids wear for Dussehra?

A festive kurta set or sharara for the morning puja, family visits and the Ramlila, with sleeves and a soft lining for long evenings outdoors. For the Ravan dahan itself, change into close-fitting cotton and closed shoes, with no trailing dupatta.

When is Dussehra in 2026?

Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, falls on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, the day after Sharad Navratri ends. The Ravan dahan usually takes place that evening after sunset.

Is it safe to take children to Ravan dahan?

It can be, with care. Stay well back from the effigy, dress children in cotton rather than synthetics, keep dupattas off, use closed shoes, protect small children's ears from the bangs, and put your phone number in their pocket in case you get separated in the crowd.

What can my daughter wear to dress as Sita for a school Dussehra function?

A lehenga with a light dupatta draped over her head reads as Sita on stage. Add costume jewellery and a small crown from a costume shop. A real lehenga can be worn again for Diwali and weddings, unlike a one-off costume.

Can I order a kids' outfit now for Dussehra?

Our kidswear is made to order in 4–5 weeks plus 3–7 days of shipping, so a piece ordered in late September or October won't arrive for 20 October. It may make Diwali on 8 November if ordered very soon — message us your date on WhatsApp first and we'll tell you honestly.
