If you have been invited to a Mappila wedding in north Kerala, the short answer is this: dress modestly and festively, in colour, with your shoulders and arms covered and a light dupatta or scarf to hand. You will see sarees and churidars (salwar-kameez) everywhere, alongside abayas and hijabs. Non-Muslim guests are not expected to wear the latter, but sleeves, a sensible neckline and something to cover your head with will never be wrong. Choose light fabrics: the coast from Kannur to Malappuram is humid all year.

This guide takes a guest from the mylanchi night and the oppana to the nikah and the feast. Mappila weddings vary a great deal, between districts, between matrilineal and patrilineal families, and between conservative homes and city halls, so treat this as a map, not a rulebook. If you are going to a Hindu or Christian wedding in Kerala instead, see our Kerala Hindu wedding guide or our Syrian Christian wedding guide.

Who the Mappilas Are, and Why It Changes the Wedding

Mappila is the name for the Malayalam-speaking Muslims of Kerala, whose heartland is Malabar, the north of the state. Their wedding culture is its own thing, from Mappila songs (Mappilappattu) in a mix of Malayalam and Arabic to Thalassery biryani.

One feature surprises many outside guests. Several coastal Mappila communities, notably in Kozhikode (around Kuttichira and Thekkepuram), Kannur and Thalassery, are historically matrilineal and matrilocal. In these families the bride does not move to her husband's house. Instead her family prepares a room for the couple, the ara, in the bride's home, and the groom, the puthiyappila (literally "new bridegroom"), comes to live there for much of the time. An anthropological study of Kozhikode weddings notes that her family calls him puthiyappila for the rest of his life, and that decorating the ara is often the biggest expense of a daughter's wedding. Patrilineal families follow the familiar pattern, with the bride going to the groom's house. For a guest, the upshot is that much of the celebration happens around the bride's home, sitting, eating and visiting, so dress for comfort as well as photographs.

The Mylanchi Night and the Oppana

The night before the wedding is the mylanchi (henna) night at the bride's home. The bride's hands and feet are patterned with henna among women relatives and friends, and the evening is full of song. Among the old matrilineal families of Kozhikode, the wedding-eve function is also called vettilakettu, after the bundles of betel leaves that women once tied for the guests; today small packets of sweet areca nut usually take their place.

The centrepiece is the oppana, the Mappila wedding performance. The bride, in her finery, gold and henna, sits on a raised seat (the peetam) while young women and girls of the family, traditionally around fifteen of them, sing Mappila songs and move in a circle around her. In the faster style, oppana murukkam, they clap in rhythm; in the slower oppana chayal there is no clapping. The songs praise the bride and tease the couple about married life. Some weddings, especially in Kasaragod and Malappuram, also have duff muttu, a performance built around a frame drum.

This is the most colourful evening of the wedding: wear colour. You may be sitting low and clapping along, so choose a kurta set or sharara you can move in, keep the dupatta light, and avoid pale silk if you are having henna applied. Our mehendi outfit guide has more ideas.

The Jhoomar & Shafaq set (₹22,500) is a green silk kurta hand-embroidered with marodi, sequins and beadwork in floral vines and jaal motifs, with a vivid pink neckline and sleeve cuffs, over matching pants.

If you want the swing of a sharara, the Roshni & Nazreen set (₹31,800) pairs a mustard-yellow Chanderi kurta, covered in a trellis of aari and gold-thread vines with pink resham florals, sequins, nakshi and moti, with a soft pink Chanderi sharara. The Gia & Cyraa set (₹28,500) is lime-green silk with floral embroidery in rose gold and deep fuchsia along the neckline, sleeves and hem, worked in marodi, gota, sequins and thread, with scattered bootis and straight pants.

The Nikah

The nikah is the marriage contract itself and the one ceremony Islam requires. It takes place before a qazi and two witnesses, and the groom gives the bride her mahr, which in Malabar is very often gold. It is held at the mosque, at the bride's home or, increasingly, in a wedding hall. Traditionally the bride is not present: the contract is made between the groom and her guardian, with her consent given beforehand, and when a bride in Kozhikode district attended her own nikah at a mosque in 2022, it made the news. So a mosque nikah is often largely a men's gathering, with women guests at the bride's home or the hall. In some matrilineal Kozhikode families the nikah and the wedding proper (the kalyanam) are separate events, months apart, so check which one you are invited to.

This is where modest dressing matters most: sleeves to the elbow or longer, a neckline at the collarbone, a kurta long enough to sit in, and a dupatta you can raise over your head near the mosque or the elders. See our guide to draping a dupatta over the head and our nikah outfit guide goes further.

  • The Banni & Aayat set (₹19,350) is a full-length soft Chanderi kurta with hand-covered buttons down the front, floral and paisley embroidery in sequins, nakshi, cutdana and thread at the yoke, cuffs and hem, and churidar-style pants.
  • The Faiza & Rida set (₹19,500) is soft gold silk with a gentle V-neck and three-quarter sleeves, hand-embroidered with gota and thread in rose and coral, over pants with a broad embroidered border.
  • The Saher & Naazli set (₹32,500) is rose-pink silk with a scoop neck and three-quarter sleeves, a central embroidered medallion on the bodice and circular floral butis in green, orange and pink resham with mirror work, sequins and beads.

None of these sets includes a dupatta, so add one. The Miraal dupatta (₹15,500) is sage-green tissue with circular floral butis in green, orange and pink resham, mirror work, sequins and beads, matching the Saher embroidery, with soft tassels. For something lighter over the head, the Zarveen dupatta (₹9,500) is sheer sage-green Chanderi with a delicate zari border. Browse all our dupattas.

If you want more coverage than a piece shows, such as longer sleeves or a higher neck, message us before you order and we will tell you honestly what can be changed on that design; every piece is cut to your measurements at no extra charge. Our guide to custom modest wear explains the options.

The Groom's Arrival and the Wedding Day

Older accounts of Mappila weddings describe the bride's male relatives going to fetch the groom, the puyyapla or puthu mappila, and bringing him to her house at night in a procession with lamps and singers, where a brother-in-law washes his feet and is given a gold ring. Much of this has been simplified and many weddings now happen by day in a hall, but the groom's arrival is still a moment the bride's side turns out for.

For the wedding day, a saree is the classic choice. Unlike at a Kerala Hindu wedding, you are not working to the cream-and-gold kasavu palette, so colour is welcome. The Phalgun & Myra saree (₹27,500) is yellow Banarasi silk with florals woven in silver thread and a rich lace border, paired with an ivory blouse with a rounded neck, floral embroidery and sequinned butis. If you are wearing a saree you already own and want sleeves, the Ziya blouse (₹6,500) is jewel-toned silk with a round neck and full-length sleeves, embroidered with tonal sequin vines and florals across the body and arms. Browse all our blouses.

The Feast: Biryani, Ghee Rice and the Puthiyappila's Breakfast

The dish everyone knows is Thalassery biryani, made not with basmati but with kaima or jeerakasala, a short-grained, fragrant Kerala rice. Ghee rice (neychoru) with meat curry is just as traditional; in the old matrilineal families of Kozhikode the wedding-day meal was kept simple, ghee rice with mutton or beef stew, and biryani arrived more recently. Their real show is the morning after: the puthiyappila nasta, the groom's first breakfast at the bride's house, laid out with chicken, mutton and fish dishes and sweets made from eggs and banana.

Biryani is eaten with the hand at many Malabar weddings, so dress for it: no wide, trailing cuffs, no long dupatta hanging near the plate, and an outfit you can sit down in.

The Reception

A reception is where a little more shine belongs. The Ameera & Hoorain set (₹32,500) is deep sapphire-blue silk with marodi, resham, sequin, cutdana, bead and aari embroidery: florals at the neckline and geometric, linear patterns along the sleeves and pant hem. The Ananya & Tavishi set (₹29,500) is a tissue kurta in antique gold and muted green, with clustered florals in resham, sequins, cutdana and beads, over a green tissue sharara; see all our sharara sets. For a saree, the Aashiqui saree (₹37,295) is royal-blue chiffon with sequin and cutdana florals and a delicate border; the blouse is ordered separately, so pair it with full sleeves if you want the coverage. Our walima outfit guide covers the groom's side's reception in more detail.

An Honest Note on What We Make

Our pieces are made in our Jaipur atelier: we buy handwoven cloth and embroider it by hand. We do not make abayas, hijabs or the traditional Mappila kachi mundu, kuppayam and thattam, and we do not make jewellery, so the gold is up to you. What we do make that is useful at a Mappila wedding is the kurta set, sharara, saree or blouse that a guest wears, made to your measurements, with a dupatta to match.

Five Practical Things for a Wedding in Malabar

  • It is humid all year. Kozhikode's average humidity runs from about 70% in winter to the high 80s in June, and the northeast monsoon brings rain from mid-October into November. Choose Chanderi, organza, chiffon and lighter silks over heavy brocade, and see our monsoon wedding fabric guide if you are travelling in the rains.
  • Expect separate spaces. Some families seat men and women separately, and the oppana is a women's affair. Go with it.
  • Carry a dupatta, always. Even if no one asks you to cover your head, you will be glad of it near the mosque or with elders.
  • Keep gold below bridal scale. Gold is central to a Mappila bride's look; if you wear yours, let hers lead.
  • Order with honest timing. Our pieces are made to order in 4–5 weeks, plus 3–7 days for shipping. Ordered today, 11 October, a piece reaches you around the third or fourth week of November at the earliest, so it suits a wedding from late November onwards, not one this month or early next.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a guest wear to a Malabar Muslim wedding?

A saree or a kurta set (churidar) in a festive colour, with sleeves to the elbow or longer, a modest neckline and a light dupatta you can put over your head if needed. Many Muslim women guests also wear an abaya or hijab, but non-Muslim guests are not expected to. Choose light fabrics, because the Malabar coast is humid all year.

What is oppana?

Oppana is the Mappila wedding performance in which young women, traditionally around fifteen, sing Mappila songs and move in a circle around the bride, who sits on a raised seat wearing her gold and henna. In oppana murukkam they clap in rhythm; in oppana chayal there is no clapping. It is closely linked with the mylanchi (henna) celebrations.

What is a puthiyappila?

Puthiyappila means "new bridegroom". In the matrilineal Mappila families of places like Kozhikode, Kannur and Thalassery, the groom lives for much of the time in a room (the ara) prepared for the couple in the bride's family home, and her family goes on calling him puthiyappila for life. His first breakfast there, the puthiyappila nasta, is a famous spread.

Does the bride attend the nikah in Kerala?

Traditionally, often not. In Kerala the nikah is usually agreed between the groom and the bride's guardian before a qazi and two witnesses, with her consent given beforehand, and when it is held at a mosque it is largely a men's gathering. Practice varies by family and mosque, so women guests should ask where they are expected to be.
