For a Memon wedding, dress modestly and festively. Wear sleeves, an ankle-length hem, nothing sheer or low-cut, and a dupatta you can pull over your hair at the nikah. A silk or Chanderi kurta set, an anarkali or a sharara set in a rich colour is exactly right. Save bright yellows and greens for the women's mehndi, and your dressiest piece for the walima. Be ready for men and women to sit or eat separately at some functions, and leave heavy bridal red and gold to the bride.

The Memons are a Sunni Muslim community, mostly of the Hanafi school, with roots in Sindh, Kutch and Kathiawar. Today the largest numbers live in Karachi and Gujarat, and there are well-established communities in Mumbai, Kerala, Sri Lanka, South Africa, East Africa, the Gulf, the UK and North America. Customs vary a great deal between branches, cities and families. Treat this as a map rather than a rulebook, and ask the person who invited you when in doubt.

First: Which Memon Wedding?

Memons trace their ancestry to Lohana families of Sindh who embraced Islam in the fifteenth century. Accounts differ on the exact year. Over the following centuries they spread into Kutch and Kathiawar, and from there along the trade routes. The two branches you are most likely to meet are:

  • Kutchi (Cutchi) Memons, from Kutch, who traditionally speak Kutchi. Records put them in Bombay from 1813, and a large group settled in Kerala around 1815. In Mumbai, the Cutchi Memon Jamat runs its own banquet halls and a matrimonial service for the community.
  • Kathiawadi or Halai Memons, from Kathiawar, who speak Memoni, a language of their own that mixes Sindhi, Kutchi and Gujarati. The name Halai is usually linked to the Halar region around Jamnagar, though some trace it to Hala in Sindh. After 1947 many settled in Pakistan, especially Karachi, and further afield.

There are smaller groups too, such as the Bantva Memons and Sindhi Memons. Memons usually marry within the community, so a non-Memon guest is most often a friend, neighbour or colleague. If the family's roots are in Kutch, our Kutchi wedding guide covers the region's wider wedding culture. If you have a Bohra wedding coming up as well, our Dawoodi Bohra wedding guide explains how differently that community dresses.

An Honest Note on What We Make

We do not make abayas, hijabs or burqas, and we do not make menswear. We do not make ghararas either; we make shararas, which flare from the hip rather than gathering at the knee (our sharara vs gharara guide explains the difference). What we make are hand-embroidered kurta sets, anarkalis, sharara sets and dupattas, made in our Jaipur atelier. They sit naturally at a Memon wedding when worn with a dupatta over the hair. Every adult piece is cut to your measurements at no extra charge, so you can ask for full sleeves, a higher neckline or a longer kurta. Everything below is described as it actually is.

The Engagement

The engagement is usually a small family affair. Many South Asian Muslim families call it the mangni. One account of Memon custom in Sri Lanka calls it the nāthro, held at the bride's home among close family. It describes a sweetening of the mouth, the mithomu, with kheer-kumā, a sweet of milk, sugar, nuts and vermicelli. A larger vado mithomu follows, for friends and extended family, where the two sides exchange gifts. Names and order differ between families. If you are invited, dress as for a festive family lunch: a kurta set and a dupatta.

The Peethi and the Mehndi: Where Colour Belongs

Kutchi Memon families in Kochi describe a peethi lasting seven days before the wedding. The bride stays indoors, and a paste of sandalwood, haldi, almond meal, herbs and rosewater is applied every day. The name will be familiar from Gujarati weddings, where the pithi is the haldi. Other families keep a shorter version or none at all. Elsewhere you may hear the seclusion called mayun, and our manjha and mayun guide covers that yellow ceremony more broadly.

The mehndi comes a day or two before the wedding. The Kochi account places it on the eve, when the women of the groom's family arrive with the bride's trousseau. The Sri Lankan account describes it as an all-female affair: the groom's female relatives bring henna, sweets and fruit, and each applies a little to a betel leaf in the bride's hand before an artist does the full design.

If the room is all women, you can relax the coverage a little indoors. Still dress modestly for arriving and leaving, and keep a dupatta to hand. This is the place for sunshine yellow, green and pink. The Roshni & Nazreen set (₹31,800) pairs a mustard-yellow Chanderi kurta with a soft pink Chanderi sharara. The kurta is covered in a trellis of vines in fine aari and golden thread, with pink resham florals, sequins, nakshi and moti. The Zuhra & Reha set (₹28,450) is sunshine-yellow Chanderi with a scoop neckline, embroidered all over with bouquets in hot pink and orange resham, aari, sequins, bead and nakshi work. The Sahira & Fizza set (₹27,500) is a pistachio-green silk kurta over a lime-yellow silk pant, with floral and paisley motifs in resham, sequins, cutdana, beads and aari.

The Nikah: Cover Your Hair, Keep It Gentle

The nikah is the marriage itself. The bride and groom each give their consent before witnesses, and the mehr, the groom's gift to the bride, is agreed and recorded in the nikahnama. It may be held at a mosque, at home or in a hall. In Karachi, the New Memon Masjid, which opened in 1949, is well known for Memon nikahs. Where the nikah is held at a mosque, it may be largely or entirely a men's gathering, with the women celebrating at home or in a separate room. The Sri Lankan account describes a nikah after the afternoon prayer, attended by men, with dates and rock sugar handed round.

Whether you are in the room or not, dress for a religious occasion. Wear sleeves to the wrist or at least three-quarter length, a hem to the ankle, and nothing that clings or shows skin through sheer fabric. Choose soft, warm colour over heavy sparkle. The Faiza & Rida set (₹19,500) is a soft gold silk kurta with a gentle V-neckline and three-quarter sleeves. Gota and thread work in rose and coral trails along the neckline, sleeves and hem, and the matching pant has a broad embroidered border.

The Darya & Keya set (₹20,175) is champagne-taupe silk in a straight, long-line cut with a V-neckline. Magenta-pink florals and golden vines in zari, sequins, cutdana and micro-beads sit at the neckline and sleeve hems. The Nazakat & Saanwli set (₹24,475) is Chanderi with wide-legged pants. Floral bootis are scattered across it, with bold paisleys in zardozi, cutdana, sequins and bead work on the sleeves and pant hem. If you want a higher neckline on any of them, tell us when you order. Our nikah outfit guide covers the ceremony across communities.

The Dupatta Does the Work

Your dupatta goes over your hair at the nikah and whenever prayers are read. It will often stay there through the meal, so choose it for how it behaves. Soft Chanderi grips hair better than crisp organza or tissue, and two small pins at the back help with either. Our guide to draping a dupatta over your head shows several secure ways to wear it.

  • The Rimza dupatta (₹10,500) is lightweight Chanderi in a deep, sun-kissed ochre, with a shimmering trim at the borders. It suits a gold, beige or taupe kurta.
  • The Falak dupatta (₹6,500) is deep forest-green organza silk with a soft zari border and floral bootis in sequins, cutdana and thread. Pin it, as organza slides.
  • The Noorejhan dupatta (₹7,500) is Chanderi with a border of hand-done marodi, sequins and thread work in vine motifs and traditional patterns.

The Meal: Biryani, and Sometimes Separate Seating

Food matters at a Memon wedding. Memoni biryani is a fixture at weddings and celebrations. It is famously spicy, with tomatoes, green chillies and potatoes, and little or no food colouring. In Kochi, the Kutchi Memon nikah lunch is a white mutton biryani with puli chatni, a tamarind and jaggery chutney, followed by seero, a semolina halwa. That account notes that lunch is served separately to men and women.

Separate seating is common enough to plan for. As a woman, you may spend the meal in the women's section, at a table or on the floor, depending on the family. Choose a silhouette you can sit comfortably in: a sharara, an anarkali or a straight kurta with relaxed pants. And skip wide, trailing sleeves and long tassels that dip towards the food.

The Rukhsati and the Walima

After the nikah comes the rukhsati, the bride's farewell from her family home. It is usually a tender moment for close family, so it is best observed quietly. The walima is the groom's family's reception, held after the nikah, often the next day. It is usually the largest and dressiest function, and the one most non-Memon friends attend. The Sri Lankan account describes men and women in separate rooms, with the groom escorted to sit beside his bride. In big city halls, families often seat everyone together. Either way, the walima is where a guest can go richest: same coverage, deeper colours, more shine.

The Ananya & Tavishi set (₹29,500) is a tissue sharara set. The kurta's bodice and sleeves are antique gold, its gathered lower panels a soft green, and the bodice carries clustered florals in resham, sequins, cutdana and bead work, over a matching green tissue sharara. The Chanbeli & Badli set (₹32,850) is an ivory satin kurta with a floral jaal in aari and multicolour resham, French knots, sequins and cutdana, over a sheer organza sharara. If you choose it, wear it with a coloured dupatta so the look reads as festive rather than bridal white.

For a long, straight line, the Ruhaniyat & Amber set (₹37,500) is terracotta Chanderi with a waistcoat-style overlay in fabric appliqué and gota. The bodice is a dense trellis of marodi and aari, with nakshi and moti roses, over an ochre Chanderi churidaar.

Three Things Worth Knowing

  • Coverage first, then colour. Sleeves, length and an opaque fabric matter more than which shade you pick.
  • Leave bridal red to the bride. The bride usually wears the heaviest gold work in the room. A guest in deep red and dense zari can look like a rival.
  • Get your sleeves made. We cut every adult piece to your measurements at no extra charge, including full sleeves and a longer kurta. Our custom modest wear guide explains what is possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a non-Memon woman wear to a Memon wedding?

Wear something modest and festive: sleeves to at least three-quarter length, an ankle-length hem, nothing sheer or low-cut, and a dupatta you can wear over your hair. A kurta set, an anarkali or a sharara set is ideal. Keep bright yellows and greens for the mehndi and your richest piece for the walima.

Do I need to cover my head at a Memon nikah?

Yes, it is respectful to cover your hair with a dupatta during the nikah and whenever prayers are read. A soft Chanderi dupatta stays in place more easily than crisp organza, and a couple of pins help. You do not need to wear a hijab or abaya unless you already do.

What is the difference between Kutchi and Halai Memons?

Both are Sunni Muslim branches of the Memon community. Kutchi Memons come from Kutch and traditionally speak Kutchi. Kathiawadi or Halai Memons come from Kathiawar and speak Memoni, a language mixing Sindhi, Kutchi and Gujarati. Wedding customs vary more by family and city than by branch.

Are men and women seated separately at Memon weddings?

Often, at least for some functions. Accounts from Kochi and Sri Lanka describe the nikah lunch and the walima served separately to men and women, and the mehndi is usually a women's gathering. Many city receptions seat everyone together, so ask your host.

Can I wear yellow to a Memon mehndi?

Yes. Yellow, green and pink suit the mehndi and the peethi days. A sharara set is especially practical because it is easy to sit in on the floor while henna is applied.
