Best Gota Patti Brands in India 2026: Where to Buy Real Rajasthani Gota Work
The short answer: for designer gota patti, the names most associated with the craft are Anita Dongre, Gopi Vaid, Punit Balana and Sheetal Batra. For traditional Rajasthani pieces at every budget, go to the old-city bazaars of Jaipur. And for gota hand-appliquéd on silk, chanderi, organza and tissue and cut to your measurements, a made-to-order Jaipur atelier like ours is the third route. Which one is right depends less on the label than on the gota itself, so this guide covers both.
Gota patti is the most Rajasthani of embroideries: a woven metallic ribbon, cut and folded into leaves, petals and borders, then stitched onto cloth by hand. It looks heavy and wears light, which is why it has outlived almost every trend in Indian occasion wear. It is also a craft where the word on the label tells you very little about what the ribbon is made of, so read on before you pay.
First: What Gota Actually Is
Gota is a narrow ribbon woven with flattened metallic wire running one way and cotton or silk thread the other. Karigars cut it into shapes (the patti, or leaf, that gives the craft its name), fold it, and hem or back-stitch it onto the fabric. In Rajasthan the work also goes by gota kinari, for edgings, and lappe ka kaam. Craft researchers place the ribbon weaving in Surat and Ajmer and the embroidery itself in Jaipur and nearby centres such as Nayla. Our gota patti craft guide goes deeper into the history, and the gota vs zardozi vs aari vs mukesh comparison shows how it sits beside the other metal embroideries.
Real gota vs imitation gota
There are three broad materials, and all three are sold as "gota":
- Gold and silver gota. The original. Real precious-metal wire, which is why gota patti was once worn mainly by royal and wealthy households. Rare and expensive today.
- Copper-based gota. Copper wire coated with silver, which replaced pure metal as prices rose. It has real metallic weight and lustre, and like any metal it can tarnish with time and damp.
- Plastic (polyester) gota. A metallised polyester film that now makes up most of what is sold. It resists moisture and does not tarnish, and it is perfectly legitimate. The only problem is when it is priced as if it were metal.
None of these is "fake" in itself; the question is whether the description matches the price. Our guide to real zari vs imitation uses the same logic, because gota is, in effect, zari woven into a ribbon.
Designer Labels Known for Gota Patti
Anita Dongre
The name most people think of first. A Mumbai-based fashion house whose core inspiration has always been Rajasthan, with gota patti as a recurring signature from pastel wedding-guest sets to bridal lehengas. It is widely stocked and has its own stores, which makes it easy to see the work in person before you commit.
Best for: Wearable designer gota, trying on before buying.
Gopi Vaid
Founded in 2003 by Gopi Vaid and Arnaz Soonawalla, this Mumbai label has built its identity on making festive wear joyful and light, with gota patti as a hallmark, turned into floral and geometric motifs on kurta sets, shararas and lehengas.
Best for: Colourful, lightweight festive sets.
Punit Balana
A Jaipur label launched in 2015 and built on the city's own crafts. Gota appears alongside marodi and resham in collections that read as modern and pared-back rather than heavily ornamented, made with artisans the designer has worked with for many years.
Best for: Contemporary Jaipur craft with a minimalist eye.
Sheetal Batra
A New Delhi label, started in 2002, known for vintage aesthetics and revived embroidery techniques. Marodi, zardozi and dabka are its strengths, and gota patti appears across lehengas, chogas and odhnis with a deliberately old-world feel.
Best for: Heirloom-looking odhnis and vintage-inspired sets.
Jaipur's Old Bazaars and Multi-Designer Stores
Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar, Jaipur
The walled-city markets near Hawa Mahal are where gota patti lives day to day. Johari Bazaar is known for jewellery as well as sarees, lehengas and bandhej textiles; Bapu Bazaar mixes mojris and handicrafts with sarees and dupattas worked in gota and mirror. Expect a very wide range of quality and price, from plastic-gota dupattas to heavy poshaks. Ask what the gota is made of, handle several pieces side by side, and note that many old-city shops close on Sundays. Our Jaipur shopping guide maps the markets street by street.
Best for: Traditional Rajasthani pieces, comparing in person, every budget.
Pernia's Pop-Up Shop and Aza
Both multi-designer retailers carry gota patti from dozens of labels, which is the quickest way to compare them at once. Read the fabric and embellishment line rather than trusting the photograph; gota photographs brighter than it looks in hand.
Best for: Comparing designers in one sitting.
Made to Order in Jaipur: Where We Come In
We will state our interest plainly. We are a small label with our atelier in Vaishali Nagar, Jaipur, and more than two dozen of our current pieces carry gota, usually alongside other hand techniques (marodi, resham, sequins, cutdana, moti), every one made to order over 4–5 weeks and cut to your measurements at no extra charge. One honest note: our product pages describe the technique, not the metal content of the ribbon. If it matters to you whether a piece uses metal or polyester gota, message us on WhatsApp before you order and we will tell you what that piece uses.
Gota appliqué as the main event
The Zehan kurta with Aabha sharara (₹62,250) is the most traditional expression of the craft we make: majestic purple silk carrying a dense landscape of hand-done gota appliqué, each metallic ribbon folded and stitched into rhombus and floral shapes to form a shimmering trellis across the bodice, layered with sequins, resham and moti, over a gold tissue sharara. The Laalsa jacket with Ravaya sharara (₹73,450) uses gota differently, as finely cut gold and silver shapes appliquéd into petals, leaves and highlights within a vermilion silk jaal of marodi, zari, resham and aari, with subtle linear gota accents on the sharara.
For a lehenga, the Driti blouse with Hesyra lehenga (₹75,000) is radiant yellow silk with an ornate scalloped floral hem border of gota patti appliqué worked with zari, marodi, sequins and cutdana, and a blouse embroidered all over. The Ishq-e-Gul lehenga with Inara blouse (₹37,500) is the playful one: soft tissue jacquard in panels of pink, gold, peach, ivory and green, each panel edged with sequin-lined gota and finished with a gota-patti and marodi border in gold. Our gota patti bridal lehenga guide covers what to expect at the heavier end.

Kurta sets for mehendi, pooja and festive days
Gota is at its most wearable on a kurta. The Leela kurta with Sifat pant (₹18,500) is lightweight chanderi with a floral jaal down the central panel that builds into a bold leaf motif at the hem, in gota patti, sequins, resham and beads, inspired by the phool-patti patterns of old Rajasthani ceremonial dress. The Faiza kurta with Rida pant (₹19,500) is soft gold silk with gota and thread work in rose and coral trailing along the neckline, sleeves and hem. The Inara kurta with Nazm pant (₹25,500) puts gota-patti motifs on the placket and cuffs, outlined in resham and sequins, with a gota border on the pant.

Sarees, dupattas and a blouse
The Sakhi saree (₹25,000) is deep sindoori red organza with sequin, cutdana and gota floral butis and a bold scalloped border in the old bridal manner. The Salima saree (₹18,500) is the quiet one: light, fluid chiffon edged with a delicate gota border in soft gold and scattered with small bootis. As with all our sarees, the blouse in the photograph is not included.

A gota dupatta is the easiest way into the craft, and it lifts a plain suit instantly. The Mishti dupatta (₹9,500) is vibrant pink silk crossed by shimmering gold gota stripes along its whole length, with multi-coloured silk tassels at the corners. The Kainaat dupatta (₹9,750) is sheer organza with circular medallions of gota patti, sequins, resham and beads, drawn from the phool jhaal odhnis of old Rajasthan, inside a gota-finished border. And the Suki blouse (₹7,500) puts the two great Jaipur crafts together: pista green silk bandhej with a cut-out neckline and halter back, edged in gota, marodi and resham. See more in the dupatta collection.
How to Judge Gota Patti Before You Pay
- Ask what the gota is made of. Metal (silver-coated copper or better) or polyester. Any honest seller can answer; vagueness is the answer.
- Look at the lustre. Metal gota tends to have a softer, deeper glow and can mellow or darken with age. Polyester gota does not tarnish, so it generally stays uniformly bright.
- Feel the weight. Metal gota is generally heavier and holds a crease; polyester film is lighter and springier.
- Check the stitching, not just the ribbon. Hand-appliquéd gota is hemmed or back-stitched with small, slightly irregular stitches along the edges. Glued or machine-attached ribbon lifts at the corners. Our hand vs machine embroidery guide shows what to look for on the reverse.
- Look at the folds. Good gota patti is cut and folded into crisp shapes; leaves and petals should sit flat with clean points, not puckered edges.
- Match the gota to the cloth. Heavy all-over gota on a fine organza pulls the fabric over time. On light cloth, borders, bootis and medallions last longer.
- Plan the care. Dry clean only, store in muslin rather than plastic, and keep perfume off it; metal gota tarnishes faster in damp.
If you are dressing for a wedding in the state itself, our Rajasthani wedding guest guide explains where gota fits each function.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which brand is best for gota patti in India?
For designer gota patti, Anita Dongre is the best-known name, with Gopi Vaid for light, colourful festive sets, Punit Balana for contemporary Jaipur craft and Sheetal Batra for vintage-inspired odhnis. For traditional Rajasthani pieces at every budget, shop the old bazaars of Jaipur. For gota hand-appliquéd on silk, chanderi or tissue and cut to your measurements, made-to-order Jaipur ateliers, ours included, are a third route.
How can I tell real gota from plastic gota?
Metal gota, traditionally silver-coated copper or precious metal, is generally heavier, has a softer glow and can darken with age and damp. Plastic gota is metallised polyester film: lighter, springier, uniformly bright and does not tarnish. Both are legitimate; the simplest test is to ask the seller in writing what the gota is made of.
Where is gota patti made?
Gota patti is a Rajasthani craft. Much of the ribbon is woven in Surat and Ajmer, and the embroidery is centred on Jaipur and nearby craft centres, where karigars cut, fold and stitch the ribbon onto cloth by hand.
Is gota patti too heavy to wear?
Usually not. Gota looks rich but is light to wear, which is why it suits long daytime functions like mehendi, haldi and pooja. Weight comes from how densely it is used and on what cloth: borders and bootis on chanderi or organza are very light; a full gota trellis on silk is heavier, though still made for a long function.
How should I care for gota patti?
Dry clean only. Store folded in muslin, never plastic, with a layer of soft cloth over the gota, and refold every few months. Keep perfume and damp away from it, since metal gota tarnishes. If you need to press it, iron on the reverse with a cloth in between and keep heat low.
