Where to Shop for Indian Clothes in the USA & Canada: A Complete Guide

North America's Indian clothing retail is organised around about seven neighbourhoods, and if you do not live near one of them your options narrow very quickly to ordering online. That is the defining fact of shopping for Indian clothes on this continent: unlike London, where three areas cover most of the city, the US and Canada concentrate everything into a handful of districts separated by thousands of miles.

New York and New Jersey

Jackson Heights, Queens

The oldest South Asian retail district in the New York area, concentrated along 74th Street and Roosevelt Avenue. Sari houses, jewellers, fabric shops and a dense, walkable few blocks that have been serving the community since the 1970s.

Best for: sarees, everyday suits and jewellery, at mid-market prices, with the advantage of being reachable by subway. Less strong at the bridal end than New Jersey.

Oak Tree Road, Edison and Iselin, New Jersey

The largest Indian retail strip in the United States, running for well over a mile through Edison and Iselin. This is where the New York metro area's weddings actually get dressed.

Best for: bridal lehengas, heavy occasion wear and full-family wedding shopping, plus the deepest bench of alteration tailors in the country. If you are buying for a wedding anywhere on the East Coast, this is the drive to make. Go on a weekday; wedding-season Saturdays are chaos.

Chicago: Devon Avenue

West Devon Avenue in Rogers Park is the Midwest's answer, and one of the most concentrated stretches of South Asian retail in the country. Sari shops, jewellers, fabric and a long-established trade.

Best for: the whole range in one street — it is the only serious option for several hundred miles in any direction, and it knows it. Prices are competitive and the range is genuinely broad.

California

Artesia — Pioneer Boulevard, Los Angeles

Little India in Artesia, centred on Pioneer Boulevard, is Southern California's hub. Strong on sarees, bridal and jewellery, with a substantial Gujarati and Punjabi retail base.

The Bay Area — Fremont and Sunnyvale

Fremont's Little India along Fremont Boulevard, and the Indian retail clusters in Sunnyvale and Milpitas, serve one of the wealthiest Indian populations in the world. Quality skews higher and so do prices. Best for occasion wear and a growing number of designer stockists.

Texas and the South

Houston's Hillcroft Avenue — the Mahatma Gandhi District — and the Indian retail around Richardson and Irving in the Dallas area cover the South. Both have grown fast alongside the tech and energy industries, and both are now credible for bridal shopping rather than just everyday wear.

Canada

Gerrard Street East, Toronto

The Gerrard India Bazaar is the older of Toronto's two options, a compact strip east of downtown with sari shops, jewellers and fabric. Charming, walkable, and increasingly outgunned by the suburbs.

Brampton and Mississauga

This is where Greater Toronto's Indian wedding shopping has moved. The plazas along Airport Road, Queen Street East and the Malton area in Mississauga now carry more bridal stock, more jewellers and more tailors than Gerrard Street does. Heavily Punjabi in character.

Surrey and Vancouver

Surrey's Punjabi Market along 128th Street, and the older Punjabi Market on Main Street in Vancouver, serve British Columbia. Strong on Punjabi wedding wear, salwar suits and jewellery.

If You Are Nowhere Near Any of These

Which, for most of North America, is the actual situation. The options are a flight, a trunk show, or ordering direct — and the third has become the default for a reason.

We will state our interest plainly. The argument for ordering from India is not price, though for a heavily embroidered piece it usually is cheaper. It is fit. Almost everything on a North American Indian high street is cut to a standard size chart and then altered, and dense embroidery does not alter well — you cannot take in a bodice through a zardozi panel without disturbing the work.

The Rafia anarkali in classic black silk, with a square neckline and floral sprays in soft pink and peach resham, is the piece that works hardest in a North American wardrobe — formal enough for a reception, wearable enough for a Diwali party, and in a colour that does not announce itself as a once-a-year garment. The Heeriye anarkali with Reva churidar in rich cinnamon-brown chanderi, with resham, cutdana and sequin florals through the flare, does the same job in a warmer register.

For the wedding weekend itself, the Ananya kurta with Tavishi sharara in luminous tissue — antique gold against a muted green — travels and packs far better than a lehenga, and the Aashiqui saree in deep royal blue chiffon with sequin and cutdana florals weighs almost nothing in a suitcase.

Seven Practical Notes

• Weekdays, always. Oak Tree Road, Devon Avenue and Brampton on a wedding-season Saturday are not places for considered decisions.
• Ask what the fabric is. "Silk" on a North American Indian high street frequently means art silk or polyester. Ask directly and feel the weight.
• Check the reverse of the embroidery. Hand work shows thread paths and irregularities; machine work repeats exactly. Our buyer's guide covers it.
• Book alterations before you buy. Tailors in these districts are booked solid from September through December, and a lehenga blouse is not a two-day job.
• Understand the duty position. Personal shipments into the US and Canada may attract duty and brokerage fees depending on value and carrier. We arrange shipping directly and will give you duties and timelines for your country before you commit.
• Buy for more than one wear. Distance makes single-occasion buying expensive. Pieces that cross from a wedding to a Diwali party to a work festive evening earn their place; a bridal-weight lehenga worn once does not.
